Would be Tyranny of a Minority actually.
When Magsj or Only Humean ban here, it is just them and a complainer, if there even is one, doing it. They make false claims, especially in the old days, to Logical Fallacies, but I pointed out there is no such thing. Then it was always Ad Homs, but pointed out it is orthodox, protected in advocacy by Aristotle himself to do do, and legally protected free speech.
Only speech protected ironically is hate speech, you denounce the hate speech, you get banned. I’ve been banned so often they stopped banning me.
My recommendation to you is learn how to do Syllogistic Constructions, then start studying Logical Fallacies, in a systematic approach, and figure it like a ancient battle, two sides opposing… learn the weakness of it’s supposition, learn what valid forms of useful thinking logical fallacies obstruct, and learn to advocate thinking in that way. When you see people get banned, like when you were banned and I defended you, defend them. Philosophy needs a wide variety of thinkers, even those you don’t like (we don’t like each other, but I wouldn’t dare get rid of you. I would make you use the mens room, but wouldn’t exile you).
Too many philosophy forums give the moderatorship to just anyone, and they are all too often by no means qualified to do so. On a philosophy forum, you have to be prepared for some rather absurd or unexpected behavior and perspectives, and clashes of ideas and personality. On this forum, it always aimed at harmony over thinking… Someone could argue the vilest shit politely, like Sauwelios, and if someone disputed him, that person would be threatened… that’s how bad it was, and largely still is. Misfits like Magsj, if left in charged, would run a world where people would be hauled off to death camps, so long as it was peaceful and orderly, and dissent squashed. Anyone protesting against the inhumanity would be the villian. Too many people are simply not cut out to be authority figures, the goal of coercive force is largely utilitarian, your seeking to maximize pleasure for all while decreasing the pain. On the internet, next to no real physical pain can hsppen- you remember when PhredtheFuckhead was nearly turned over to Australian Child Services because Ben was having hissyfits? I defended him on that very basis, he wasn’t actually in a position to do harm, it is a philosophy site, I showed they would naturally contrast given their opposing neural chemical makeup.
When using force, less is more. I think moderators should mostly focus on spam, not police people, I really can give a fuck what people are saying to one another 99.9% if the time, as far as blocking it goes. Would you tolerate misfit moderators following you around in your daily life, stopping you from speaking, putting you in time out, smacking you as you talk, saying “uh uh, no” when your saying things? Fuck no.
I would be willing to start a new philosophy forum, but it would have to be a paid one, based in the US, under protected US law, with emphasis that we only police spam, not posters, so long as they aren’t soliciting unrelated, non philosophy products. I would want a few volunteer moderators to start with, of differing backgrounds. I believe strongly in free speech, but also in retort. Too often I’ve seen vile moderators delete or hide perfectly good replies on this site or others. Free speech is only ethical if you have true freedom to respond, otherwise it is a tool of violence and oppression, as this forum proves. This section of the site is the only oasis where one can speak their mind and not be castigated by the moderator.
If you can find a few other moderators, I would be willing to do such a site. I want blogs and a homepage though, so a library directory and what is happening across the net for philosophy can be offered, and for the really timid, who can’t hold their own (someone like Sauwelios) could post in the blog with Max freedom. I would really love it if the threads diverged, like branches, so side conversations could evolve without the impulse of Magsj types have to come in and start cutting and making new posts out of context.
I really could care less who pists, could be the very people I’ve always denounced, so long as it was free. I don’t have much a stomach for idiots moderating people who clearly know more about a topic. Moderators are better off just presuming it is better to let things be.
