I was able to watch the entire first night of the DNC convention
and here are my thoughts…
first and foremost, they started too late…
Michelle Obama was speaking at 11:00 east coast
time and out here it was 8:00… the convention
should have started an hour earlier and ended an hour earlier…
Now, the program itself was actually pretty good…
given that this was an historic first, a online political convention…
I like it a lot… I have watched a lot of political conventions going back to
the 70’s and this one was clean and well produced… it didn’t have the
usual garbage that conventions have…the noisy crowd or the playing to
the audience crap or the dumb shoots of people jumping around and looking
stupid…
as for the content itself, clearly the highlight was Michelle Obama
and she gave a great speech… but I thought the most impressive aspects
were the Republican speakers who have turned against IQ45 and the GOP…
John Kasich ran for the GOP nomination in 2016 and yesterday gave his
endorsement to Biden… there were several ex-lifelong republican speakers
who endorsed Biden… I doubt that the GOP will find Democrats who will do
the same thing…especially ex-members of congress like Susan Molinari
and former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and a former candidate for
California Governor who ran as a republican, Meg Whitman…
three high profile ex -republicans who have endorsed and will vote for
Biden…
in perhaps the best speech of the members of the community group
was Kristin Urguiza who gave perhaps the best line of the first night,
when talking about her father who died of Covid-19 and who was a life long
republican, she said,
“his only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump
and for that, he paid with his life”
The second best line was from Bernie Sanders of all people,
he said,
“Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Trump golfed.”
all in all, a very good first night…
