I can’t ‘get’ that ad as a Portrugese would, but if it is not be take as a bit tongue and cheek, it’s rather ugly.
I mean, of course they Think that giving them Money is a ‘good work’. And if they mean the ad in a wry way, though about something serious. OK, fine.
But I am not sure how well irony and wryness work with Catholicism.
If it were a film by the Portrugesian equivalent of Aldomovar, OK.

I’m surprised that even the Church hasn’t reacted. I mean, who needs churches, priests, bibles and Popes if you can simply donate to the Red Cross and get into Heaven?

Catholics are notorious for commiting sin and then getting into heaven by confessing and making a certain amount of prayers to be absolved of the sin… pay the price for your sin and you go to heaven. Pay money and a priest puts in a good word for you… capitalism pure and simple.
They’re going to use the money to finance the systematic molestation of young boys across the world. Imagine…the cases in the US were pretty bad. Think about what must be going on in SE Asia and S America.

This “get a spot in heaven” in exchange for money type of thing isn’t new though. That’s what tithing is all about.
I just thought this ad was so disgusting that I felt compelled to talk about it. But I think it goes without saying that much of the appeal of religion is exactly the idea that you’ll get a spot of heaven as opposed to simply ceasing to exist. As Saramago once said, Death is the inventor of God.
Perhaps some of them Think it is that easy, but my impression is that most who take it seriously Think that actually contrition is required. And then, you may get caught and are likely to get caught in between confessions.
