Government: are our civil liberties in jeopardy?

This for all you philosophers into politics as well. Should governent be allowed access to every possible piece of information about its citizens without due cause?Government argues that collecting information about people is for the “common good” is this justified? New technologies like the Echelon global surveillance system can track data from any type of communication line, satelite, email, phone, you name it. Are individuals’ civil liberties being compromised or is govt just doing its job to ensure public security?

Which is better, a mostly “free” govt in which maximum freedom is available to the individual or a mostly "firm"govt with rules and guidelines?

I would love to read your opinion on these subjects

I would say it depends on which side of the line you are in. If you are in the Government it will make tracking down terrorists easier. But then again innocent citizens joking around with one another have to watch what they say.

Also in the case that the government turns corrupt and endangers civlization. How will you be able to organize a revolution? You won’t be able to. That is what sucks.

Thanks Smooth.
