So far I have thought several 1000ft underground! Only at this level can thinking be considered deep.
You see: there is no such thing as ‘deep’ thinking - the use of the word ‘deep’ is misleading, either our thoughts have substance or logical appeal, or grounds for belief.
But depth! That is a measurement not a Quality! Those who say: I am a deep thinker or you are a deep person - are rather shallow!
what is depth
but the space
of something
hollow!

Colin,
Stop standing on your head when looking at the world. Metaphor is metaphor, or as I asked somewhere else, what is a meta for? A real sloooow Sunday…
You don’t like the ‘depth’ metaphor, yet readily say our thoughts have ‘substance’ and beliefs have ‘grounds’?

I’m concerend with English Language. I do believe ‘depth’ to be a faulty description of thinking with substance and grounded in understanding.
Thinking has no ‘depth’ - like depth perception! There are only more thoughts, thoughts with greater intention, thoughts with clarity.
Yes, I’m nit picking, a depthless wonder!

Maybe depth of thought is a quality contrasted with superficiality.
Dude is that you in that pic?

Indeed, it is! It really is just a pet annoyance of mine.
In fact, to say someone or something in discussion, is deep, is quite a superficial metaphor.
‘Wow! That is sodeep …I just don’t understand it…’
Deep: Extending far downward below a surface.
Deep: Difficult to penetrate or understand; recondite.
Deep: Of a mysterious or obscure nature.
Deep: Very learned or intellectual.
Deep: Profound in quality or feeling.
Perhaps only I am not deep!
still waters run deep
beauty is only skin deep
between a rock and a hard place
Maybe depth is not so terrible a metaphor, afterall!
I think part of something being deep is it being new. The other part is it being unusual and unforeseen.
Colinsign, that is really deep.

That was unimaginative. You’re fired!
deep! haha! I’m not a strong swimmer:
I’ll be in the shallow end paddling.
Come dite in profondità in italiano?
is depth not but
the space of something
hollow!?
I suppose I’ll come to the point:
Rather than say something is DEEP
we should rather say
it is intelligent, thought provoking,
or insightful!
The only thing deep,
as I have so often alluded in this thread,
is a LARGE WHOLE!
Since Colin’s obviously not going to answer, I’ll answer for him - no, Colin’s a white dude from Scotland.

Merriam-Webster Online, “deep, adjective”, entry 3 d:
“of penetrating intellect : WISE {a deep thinker}”
m-w.com/dictionary/deep
Perhaps only men can be deep thinkers.

Technically that was a measure of distance not depth.
technically it was a measure of distance under sea level… i.e. below sea level… how far under? how deep? 20,000 leagues deep…

buzzer Sorry sir that is incorrect!
“The title refers to the distance traveled under the sea, not to the depth, as 20,000 leagues is 20 times the radius of the earth.”
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty_Tho … er_the_Sea
“League In Verne’s context, 2.16 miles”
jv.gilead.org.il/fpwalter/units.html
“Our earth is the fifth-largest planet in the solar system with a diameter of around 7,926 miles or 12,756 kilometres.”

fair enough…
20,000 leauges while under the sea…
depth with stamina…
