How do you use the emoticons?

I’m interested to hear how other people use the emoticons as a shortcut to express opinion below posts.

Here are my (usual) reasons:

  • - I loved this post, could be for many different reasons, value, good music, intention.
  • :+1: - I agree with some or all of the post.
  • :-1: - I completely disagree with the post and think it’s ignorant to the point of being dangerous (haven’t used it yet as far as I’m aware).
  • - It literally made me laugh, for whatever reason.
  • :open_mouth: - Was either highly enlightening and rocked my world, or shocking and did the same.
  • - Well done in expressing that, it probably took bravery or you did so very articulately.
  • :upside_down_face: - Your post makes no sense to me, or I am being facetious.
  • :folded_hands: - I haven’t used it, I don’t pray.
  • - This made me think.
  • :face_with_diagonal_mouth: - It’s disappointing that you think that, or the points covered disappoint me.
  • :triangular_flag: - I’m not sure what it’s for.
  • :banana_dance: - I’m mocking you and don’t think what you are saying even warrants a response.

Personally, I’d like another one (although it would destroy the symmetry of the list):

:information_source: - Your post provided me with valuable information.

Anyone else use them for different reasons?

  • :+1: - I like this post, could be for many different reasons.
  • :-1: - I dislike this post, could be for many different reasons.
  • - It literally made me laugh or, more often, I find it figuratively laughable.
  • :open_mouth: - A positive or a negative “wow” (“just wow”…).
  • - Applause or, more often, a slow clap.
  • :upside_down_face: - I rest my case, Q.E.D., etc.
  • :folded_hands: - I would only use this ironically.
  • - I find this seriously questionable (dubious).
  • :face_with_diagonal_mouth: - Something like this, I guess: “It’s disappointing that you think that, or the points covered disappoint me.”
  • :triangular_flag: - Misinformation warning.
  • :banana_dance: - Again something like this, I guess: “I’m mocking you and don’t think what you are saying even warrants a response.”

Your bullet points look a lot better than the numbers, so have edited :slightly_smiling_face:

I just quoted you, removed the [quote] commands and adapted the text. I didn’t change the numbers into bullet points, the software did that of its own accord! :open_mouth:

The software is smarter than me :joy:

Also manually removing [quote] .. the markdown editor, I’ve been avoiding it like the plague cause I really dislike markdown, but now I see why it’s pretty useful, just been schooled!

There are some that I don’t really use, so for those I put how I interpret them.

  • - I like this post.
  • :+1: - I acknowledge or affirm this post.
  • :-1: - This post is bad and you should feel bad.
  • - Laughter, usually derisive (I don’t use this frequently, and never derisively)
  • :open_mouth: - Surprise (I don’t use this frequently)
  • - Particularly well said.
  • :upside_down_face: - This one is hard to put into words. It’s kind of like saying “wheee!” to something inevitable, like we’re 'just along for the ride".
  • :folded_hands: - “Thank you.”
  • - Confusion or uncertainty about what you’re saying or how what you’re saying relates to your position. I don’t use this often, and I interpret it positively when others use it.
  • :face_with_diagonal_mouth: - I don’t use this frequently, and don’t know what it means.
  • :triangular_flag: - Misinformation (specifically added following discussion here)
  • :banana_dance: - This has a history on ILP. I started using it to be self-deprecating in relation to my frequent failures as an administrator, especially on the technical side of keeping the server working. Then I started including it most announcements. And now I think of it as a kind of site mascot. As a reaction, I use it to acknowledge our endearing imperfections.

Handy..

I’d like to keep using it to call people a banana, but educational to hear it’s a kind of mascot..
