How do you use the emoticons?

There are some that I don’t really use, so for those I put how I interpret them.

  • - I like this post.
  • :+1: - I acknowledge or affirm this post.
  • :-1: - This post is bad and you should feel bad.
  • - Laughter, usually derisive (I don’t use this frequently, and never derisively)
  • :open_mouth: - Surprise (I don’t use this frequently)
  • - Particularly well said.
  • :upside_down_face: - This one is hard to put into words. It’s kind of like saying “wheee!” to something inevitable, like we’re 'just along for the ride".
  • :folded_hands: - “Thank you.”
  • - Confusion or uncertainty about what you’re saying or how what you’re saying relates to your position. I don’t use this often, and I interpret it positively when others use it.
  • :face_with_diagonal_mouth: - I don’t use this frequently, and don’t know what it means.
  • :triangular_flag: - Misinformation (specifically added following discussion here)
  • :banana_dance: - This has a history on ILP. I started using it to be self-deprecating in relation to my frequent failures as an administrator, especially on the technical side of keeping the server working. Then I started including it most announcements. And now I think of it as a kind of site mascot. As a reaction, I use it to acknowledge our endearing imperfections.
