Human intelligence

Humans have set themselves apart from every other living thing on this planet. We continue to strive for knowledge and look for answers. Is it possible that we are evolving at a faster rate because of this? Is there a limit on human intellgience? I think the ultimate goal is discovering other intelligent life (ie aliens).

Yes there’s a limit to how much larger our brain can evolve… there should be 1~2 more stages untill we get there; this is because if the brain gets any bigger then the time for 1 impuls to travel from one part to the other will be too great and actually our brains will get dummer even if they’re the huge. :smiley:

Intelligence is measured in the natural world by comparison between the size of the brain and the body size of the same individual.
Dolphins have huge brains and come very close to the same body-brain ration that humans have; i would not be surprised if they’re slowly developing consciousness because they already have a good form of language.

I did a little reaseach on the matter regarding dolphin experiments and they’re very intelligent.
Ofcourse apes and a few monkeys have also an amaizing understanding of sign language learning up to 900 words and using them coherent.

And yes we are evolving ever more intelligent due to our search for the truth and for knowledge;

There’s a philosopher whose name i forgot, he noted that there’s a limit to how much a brain can evolve and stated that after we reach that point technology will take over by implementing artificial brains.

In my opinion, Dolphins are somewhat limited to their intelligence because they live in the water. Being land animals has been a key role in the evolution of human intelligence.

Here’s a little bit of a tougher question: Is there a limit on how much we can know or will we always be searching for answers? I think it’s a never-ending journey for knowledge. We won’t stop, it’s like an addiction. We always want to know more. The universe is too big and too powerful for us to figure out everything. But we should never stop. Knowledge is power. So we better be careful what we do with all that power.

I feel knowledge also has the power to enrich our lives;

And dolphins are not necesarily limited; language can still form even if they dont have opposing fingers on their “hands” and consciousness is a product of language.

Squids, because of their handy tentacles build “houses” on the bottom of the sea.

You spend your time watching TV, lieing to yourselves, and fucking.

Hey how about you get to know me before you judge me.

consciousness is a result of our senses. the allow us to become aware of our environment. without consciousness we would have nothing to express in language. that said , language expands our capacity for analytical thought.

Can anyone imagine conciusness without language ? and if not if language is learned, is conciusness a product of language ? i think it is.

consciousness is a product of our bodies senses. we percieve the world through the senses and thus we become aware of our surroundings.

a baby is certainly conscious as a full grown human as soon as they are born(in the sense perception sense of the word) because they can feel pain, hunger, see, smell, taste, touch; but they quite obviously do not have the capacity for thought and communication that a fuly developed human does.

I dissagree; perception is not a sign of consciousness; and young children dont have cinsciousness. It is developed later as their language becomes fuller. All animals are capable of feeling pain, hunger, see, smell, taste, touch; that doesnt make them conscius.

try to imagine lnguage without perception.

language without perception is impossible; just as consciousness is impossible without language.

This is not a quantifiable/qualifiable assertion, this debate is still ongoing.

One argument proposed is that intellect is only definable within the parameter of the creatures environment. Which leaves open the possibility that dolphin are actually of higher intelligence, but it is not applicable to terrestrial creatures.
