Hydration?

I am a former marine, I have lived in the desert for fourteen months. I know the importance of proper hydration. I know how essential water is to the body. I also know how unhealthy soda/pop/soft drinks are in an environment that calls for proactive hydration. With that being said, I looked on the back of a 12 pack of Coca Cola yesterday, and found their latest marketing ploy. It says,
“Who knew soft drinks could be hydrating? Its true. All beverages hydrate, including soft drinks. So if you are looking for hydration, but want the delicious refreshing taste you get from Coca Cola, dont compromise- go for it! You will be hydrating your body with each and every sip.”

Does this aggravate any one other than me? Does this seem like a cheap trick, to make people feel like they are drinking Coke as a healthy decision?

While some beverages can be diuretic, regular cola drinkers should not find this to be so, as the body adjusts to caffeine. Unless I am mistaken.

Myself, I’m a Gatorade freak.

i found this and it answered some questions i had.

There is much more research available – try this Google search. But I think we can make some reasonable conclusions at this point:

Soft-drinks do hydrate the body, but temporarily.
Soft-drinks contain caffeine, which is a diuretic and contributes to general dehydration.
Soft drinks hydrate the body less well than most, if not all, other beverages.
Long-term consumption is unhealthy because soft-drinks have virtually no nutritional value.
So, back to my original question: Is this marketing campaign by Coca-Cola innaccurate or misleading? No, and yes. The company’s statement is, in fact, completely accurate: Coca-Cola does hydrate the body. But, smartly, the corporation goes no further in its specific claims because a high degree of Coca-Cola consumption, according to my cursory research, leads to long-term dehydration and general unhealthiness over time. The company’s marketing campaign is not inaccurate, but it is certainly misleading.

Even water hydrates only temporarily.

I hope you are not too shocked that advertising doesn’t live up to the highest scientific standards.

Say it ain’t so, Advertisers misleading? OMG What is this world coming to.

Try this, go to the poorest part of what ever city you live in or near, Ask 500 people if they actually believe what advertisers say… you may find 10 people that fully believe. Maybe. Gads, I wish people would stop believing that the average people are stupid, gullible and incapable of judging things. That is so arrogant and ridiculous.

oh no, couldn’t have that…

if it weren’t for the stupid and gullible, there’d be no one for the socialist tyrants to control… no, people must be idiots that can’t take care of themselves, why else have government? truth in advertizing indeed.

voting your money (and autonomy) away…

At the end of the day, peeps, if you’re dehydrated, all you need to do is drink some Dasani

God forbid any american drink tapwater.

Myself, I haven’t had a drop of unadulterated water in decades. It makes me nervous.

No color, no taste, no nothing.

It’s the vampire of beverages - it can’t see itself in the mirror.

really… just look at what happened to their drummer…

Soda pop is baffling in a way, the ultimate emblem of consumerism- expensive, wasteful, unhealthy, but irresistible to the masses! :astonished: Almost more baffling is diet soda (which I concede I occasionally drink  ). It has no calories, no nutritional value whatsoever. It’s just colored chemical water, yet we pay $2 a glass for it at Burger King.

Soda is a crappy thing to drink if you’re thirsty. It’s drunk to alleviate boredom or to satisfy a craving/food addiction. Water does a much better job of hydration. Although truth be told, some sports drinks do the job even better. Water is a better choice for daily consumption, but in extreme climates or heavy exertion, Faust’s Gatorade works better. If you can stomach the taste of that rancid cat piss.

Have you not tried some of their newest flavors?, Alot of them are great.

I will admit though when you can smell a drink from across the room, it does make me sort of worried. Their Melon one is particularly strong with aroma. It does make a good air freshener

I’m sure coloring and chemical scent are not good for the body.

I know that ,especially in the amounts that make the drink look radiaoactive and you can smell it across a room. Now my husband loves that stuff, One moring I may wake up to a sweet smelling glowing man. … Thats one "I told you so " that would be for the books.

Were you at 29 Palms in the desert? I was out there once and saw those comercials that say…“heat kills, drink water.” I got pretty dehydrated more than once on that trip.

Soda is fine to drink as it is mostly water. The rest is fruit and spice oils and that’s about it.

Water in an extremely hot environment isn’t the best way to hydrate. That’s because it contains no sugar or salt. If you run out of salt, you’re in trouble.
