I’ve been on internet boards for 20 years, I used usenet before the net… I NEVER had a sig, so this is a HUGE step for me, I never thought I’d have anything worth saying in one phrase… But I actually solved a rule better than the golden rule and I had to add it, for those who have sigs disabled, it reads this:
“Do unto yourself and others as you’d do unto yourself if you were them - Ecmandu’s Rule.”
I mentioned this off topic in another thread, but decided I’d share it more publicly.
Nah, it’s a new rule… the golden rule is tit for tat, and falls apart VERY easily.
This rule is do good for yourself and others… It’s important to treat others the way you’d treat yourself if you were them, but you must also treat yourself well too. If I used only the part about treating others as I’d treat them I’d give all of my money away to the first person who wanted it and never take a job or eat food or drink water, because there are all things people want that I have that they don’t, or would like.
The golden rule also doesn’t address certain issue like breaking into women’s houses to offer sex, even though most men would LOVE it if women did that to them. So It’s important to add the part about treating them as yourself if you were them.
This way I can also keep eating food, and I don’t have to worry about going to gay bars to offer my sex to all those men… for example.
In game theory, prevention always works better than tit for tat. And this rule, which I can’t find a loophole for. Think about how many thousands of years people have been trying to solve a rule an an equation that adds benefit and no harm… I think I did just that.
