any thoughts?
I recently defined insanity as the absence of the logos.
what is true? the logos? the absense of the logos?
…or neither?
There is a direct correlation between high intelligence and “insanity.” No joke!!
The absence of the logos. For the logos does not exist; it is an illusion:
“Logic is bound to the condition: assume there are identical cases.”
[Nietzsche, The Will to Power, section 512.]
The idea of sanity is a delusion…
“The idea of sanity is a delusion…” Sauwelios, that is so true. I have often wondered in my life, “Who is really insane? The ones in the psychiatric wards, or the rest of us?”
Would you be prepared to support your doubt to the extent that we reverse the situation and put the members of insane asylums in charge of the rest of us?
Okay, obw,I’ll bite.
No, I wouldn’t put them in charge of us. However, when you are talking about a person’s definition of reality, who is to say who is wrong and who is not. Don’t you think that most “insane” people are institutionalized because their definition of reality doesn’t conform to the rest of ours? Another thing is, who is to say what “reality” really is?
Im pretty sure that the main tickbox on a sectioning form is not 'Their definition of reality does not confirm to ours", though. This means your last question isn’t so relevant. I also don’t think we can be right to think that insane people are all part of one group. There are many different versions of insanity and therefore we would have to accept multiple version of “reality” and not just ours vs theirs (i.e. not just two.)
I think that when you don’t know what to do and you realise whatever you do will make you unhappy, well, you go nuts. So, when you are nuts, you just do whatever you want to because you know you can’t really accomplish anything you really want to, or because you suspect that the consequences will be bad whatever you do. I sometimes relate insanity to pure logic, simply because insane people might know exactly what they are doing but don’t care, because they looked at a situation and saw they couldn’t make anything good out of it anyway. Then again, it could all just be chemically induced, i could be wrong. Stress, etc., causes changes in the body at times, of course.
Insanity:
A state of being human, of which, the line between fantasy and reality is often confused.
Dan, did you draw those pics? They look really nice!
Well, obw, you actually brought up a sticking point. Is my reality the same as yours? Of course not!! I have different experiences than you do;I have different thoughts; I have different emotions, beliefs, et cetera. So really, no two “realities” are exactly alike. Now are they?
No, not exact, but given the scale of 1 — 0 I would wager that we position ourselves in basically (“effectively”) the same places, whereas people who are clinically insane could appear anywhere on that scale from 1 to 0. For example, we all agree that gravity is a law of nature and respect it, whereas some insane people might and some might not as they attempt to fly from building tops.
I reckon “sane” people would look like this on a scale where X = 100 000 people.
1–X–XX-X-----------------------------------------0
Whereas “insane” people might graph more like this:
1--------X--------------XX------------------X------0
Notice nobody falls near the 0 in the “sane” grouping and that the “insane” follow no pattern or similar grouping.
So yes, there are differences in the way we perceive the world but they are not effectively fundamental, in my view.
Well, if you look throughout history, many of the things that have been believed to be true about “reality” have later been proven quite false. For example, how long did people believe the earth was flat? Now, in today’s culture, questions about the actual nature of gravity are being asked. So…I mean, …take it for what it’s worth.
You’re completely right (apart from the flat earth bit!), but that fact doesn’t affect sanity. We were not insane to believe that Pluto was a planet even though it is no longer a planet. The dividing line between sanity and insanity is reason/rationality. We believed that Pluto was a planet because we were provided with very good reasons. Insane people believe things without good reasons. (I can’t resist mentioning Faith here…)
P.s. No post-greek civilised majority ever believed the world was flat. I also, although I am no expert on pre-greek history, think the Mayans and Egyptians knew the world to be round. Is that right or not? Bit of an aside.
Obw, actually,I think many ancient cultures knew the world to be round. That is one of the mysteries of history. I just didn’t want to throw that thought upon you because I didn’t know that you had been exposed to it. I didn’t want you to think that maybe I was “insane.”
Yes - bit of a myth that flat earth thing.
classic definition of insanity:
“doing the same thing over and over
and expecting different results”
