do you think because there is such a large emphasis on not being racist that its created more problems for interacial communication? i was watching some real world show and if anyone knows the cast coral one of the mouthy bitches was complaining that someone refered to her as “colored” which she found insulting and though its dated and has racist connotations and definately has a segregative effect its still just a fucking word. less offensive then cunt i think anyway which i dont see dividing up the sexes… then again… you couldnt spread the sexes further if you tried and plus there is the arguement for self pride via feminism and other pride groups… at the same time i cant stand when people use racist slurs. but still where do you draw the line between trying to break down white peoples fucked up attempt at destroying black culture and self respect like really actually protecting yourself against racism and being overly defensive or proud that it creates a bigger gap in itself?
Black people destroy black culture too. I suggest you try hard to conceive of the possibility that racism isn’t only the domain of white people against black people.
But, more broadly, you can’t have both freedom of speech and political correctness. Just like you can’t have democracy and government…
Well, one of the problems is that politically correct language may change faster than some can keep up, assuming that they want to keep up. My father has used the term “colored” in recent memory. He is anything but racist. I grew up across the street from an African Methodist Episcopal church - that’s kind of a mouthful. We called it the “colored church”. And so did they.
I frequently call married female friends by their “maiden” (oops!) or unmarried name. I am not against marriage. For them, anyway.
A phrase that I once heard my grandmother use which to this day makes me smile: a girl policeman. Obviously she was referring to a WPC.
It’s also worth noting that the ideas of those insisting on whatever form of political correctness are almost invariably a lot more stupid and potentially damaging than the use of mildly racist slang. I couldn’t care less about the use of ‘whitey’ (the rough equivalent of ‘colo(u)red’), indeed I’d advocate its use precisely as a means to resisting nonsensical apologetics. I imagine any self-respecting black person (or any other tone of person) is sick of people trying to make arguments for them and protect them and stop all opposition to them. It’s bloody patronising, for a start. It’s also degrading - as though people who’ve suffered from racism are thereby incapable of fighting against it. I’m a firm believer in waiting until someone asks for help before deciding whether or not they need it.
I grew up at a time when, in our “kidworld” at least, no one cared. We had many ethnicities, and my hometown still does. But we broke it up into little pieces. French(-Canadian), Portuguese, Polish, African, Jewish, Italian (I was the only Italo-American in my gradeschool, I think). We used the word “Portagee” which was, a hundred years earlier, not a slur. Karen Polack was Polish, and a “Polack” - it happened to be her last name. I don’t think she was scarred by this, but I don’t really know.
What we used mostly for the Portuguese immigrants was “greenhorn”. Because, I suppose, they were actual immigrants, and everybody else was not, and had the usual “slurs” applied to them. Izzy (Isadro) Texeira was a greenhorn, and my best friend for a couple of years. To my knowledge, he thought nothing of this appellation, and used it himself. We weren’t hating anybody; we were kids on a playground. We didn’t understand the concept of political correctness, I’m quite sure. Except in one way that I remember. You didn’t go on the girls’ side of the schoolyard. The girls had one quarter of the yard, and the boys had three quarters. If you went over to talk to the girls, the principal, who happened to be a lesbian, would berate you and even punish you if you persisted. That was political correctness then.
thats impossible!!! THE ONLY CONCEIVABLE RACISM IS BLACKS VS WHITES!!! you anti racist zealot.
see this is exactly what i mean… what the fuck? what the fuck is the point? sorry… i didnt mean to not include all forms of racism in the topic. how uneducated and racist of me. it didnt take more than one post for someone to condescendingly point out that im not being generically p.c. enough.
My point was rather than a lot of problems of so-called racism are actually brought upon groups by themselves. Not that your petty PCmindedness was hypocritical. I apologise.
alright fine then. no hard feelings. but you agree then?
pc minded thinking creates more problems?
