Wow Nostalgia, wow!
I’ve always thought that basic training in the Marine Corps will turn you into some brain washed killing machine. Immediatly after boot camp I laughed at the idea. But now I know I’m not brain washed, but I know why people would think this.
First of all I’m not American. I was born in the Dominican Republic and my citizenship is over there. I’ve been in this country since I turned three. America is all I know, and I really believe in the ideals of this country. I am very patriotic to both my nations and I’m willing to kill or be killed to defend the lands where my family lives.
For as much as Ted Kennedy could get on my nerve, he has a point. I think this deal in Iraq will turn into a Vietnam situation. Only Vietnam was very unorganized and one huge gaggle fuck. And it doesn’t matter what political group started the war, what matters are the reasons. I would have been happy had Bush openly said, “Hey America. I want to take over Iraq.” or “Let’s go fuck up Sadaam for the heck of it.” It would have made sense. But no, I think his administration tried to pull a fast one when it didn’t need to.
What value do you put on a life? only 600. Yes, compared to other wars, but tell that to the families that have a closet full of clothes and shoes belonging to somebody who isn’t ever going to wear it again.
okay the meat and potatoes. I supported the war. But this isn’t the war anymore. The Marines out there are being policemen, and they are dying everyday for it. The fact is that the American people aren’t seeing what I am. They see it through the eyes of a Media that want more ratings and sell more commericial time.
I do not support the government, but I support the hell out of my fellow servicemen and women. But out of all of them I of course support the Marine Corps more. Here’s why.
In the Army, Navy, and Air Force you do have a choice when you are a non-NCO. Meaning when you are an E-3 or lower. In the Marine Corps they hold you to your word. We all took the oath of office when we enlisted into the Armed Forces. Much like the oath that every President has taken since George Washington. You raise your hand and you put your word that you will defend the constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign or domestic. That you will follow the orders of the President of the United States and those appointed over me.
Now of course if an officer orders me and says, “LCpl De la Cruz, go murder and rape all the 4 year old girls in this town,” I’m going to question his decision. But that doesn’t freaking happen. My officers are following orders that go from way up high. We usually get a vauge mission, and all you have to do is accomplish it. No need to question it. There must be reasons that the General makes these decisions and plans these things. Reasons that we don’t see at our levels, and matters of National Security that the public and even the military can’t know about.
Now there are deceptive politicians and corruption here and there, but in general we do good. That is why I don’t support the war, but honestly it doesn’t matter if I do or not. I have a mission don’t I? The entire system that has kept the United States Marine Corps kicking ass for 229 years will fall apart if some private first class questions the orders that were given to him.
Yes, we have choices. But we have sacrificed the option to make choices when we enlisted. Each single service man and woman should have thought about what the hell they were doing when they signed on the dotted line. We don’t have choices Nostalgia. The individual doesn’t mean a damn thing. From the outside looking in, it seems messed up. But when you are in a live fire zone, and your life is on the line, you will think differently. Let the guard decide that his 44 hour long post is too long. That he wants to take a nap.
Let me tell you a story. One of my Corporals from when I was in Camp Geiger in North Carolina. His best friend joined with him on the buddy system. That means that they go to boot camp together in the same platoon. Well, his friend got sent to Afghanistan after 9/11. A marine.
Well one day he is on duty, and walking his post. He had a 50 hour post. Well the Marine that was sent to relieve him decided not to follow orders and was late. He didn’t agree with gettin put on duty so he went to his Sergent to discuss getting it changed out. He got mad because he didn’t want to stand in the desert for 50 hours looking at nothing.
Well 6 hours passed since he was needed to be on duty. When he got to the post, the Lance Corporal was found gutted and naked. It was assumed that after the 55th hour he started to get hungary and exhausted. He ran out of rations and got really hungary and sleepy. His concentration wasn’t good enough to be able to realize that he could have called for back up when his post got ambushed.
We might not agree with our orders, but we need to follow them none the less. And for that they all get my respect. The job could be terrible, the situation dangerous, and you are far from home. But you do it everyday with a smile. Not because of the government, but because of each other.
