Is there a death facination in video games in general?

Seems to me that most video games and perhaps movies have a death facination… its always in their somehow and often a major point. most non such media seem to be child oriented…

I think it was alethia who came up with the idea of death obscession… it does seem to be prevelent I guess…

I’d call it a Killing obsession, people enjoy conflict, War especially if their not suffering tremedously from it that is.

I’m not much differant, why do you think the most popular games involve killing people on adventures, War etc.?

I don’t think I own a single video game that doesn’t centered around killing people.

If there were no suffering in War, and people didn’t see Death as something terrible, Would we ever stop a War?

I think General Robert E. Lee summed it up nicely in what i think is one of the Truest quotes of War in it’s entirety

“It is well that war is so terrible - otherwise we would grow too fond of it.”

War has Excitement, Conflict, Test of Skill, Bravery, Strength, the ability to Gain Victory, Wealth, Glory etc.
It is only because of the suffering and Death one could receive that all men are not War enthusiasts, of course others are willing to take the risk.

That literally made me Laugh out loud, no joke.

Human beings are naturally proned to violence, killing, and inequality.

Get over yourself.

There is no such thing as a original nature of ‘goodness’ to aspire towards.

Shutup!

There are no absolutes in human behavior, people have differant temperments when it comes to things like killing.

Your also projecting…again.

Also ones desire to kill doesn’t make them “Bad”, you can have very good men who are seasoned killers.

" . . . don’t spend too much time fighting monsters, lest you become one yourself, and if you stare at the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you."

Paraphrasing Nietzsche here.

I also said proned to violence and inequality which may not necessarily have anything to do with killing. There are absolutes in human nature.

Human nature can be defined and I am not sorry that you find that to be threatening.

Threatining? Hah!

Why would i find that threatining?

I’m ammused at the amount of faith you have in your preconceptions is all.

Though that is by no means suprising.

All of humanity is monsterous by my own definitions.

We are all savages whether we like to admit it or not.

Your misuse of words is legendary by my own definitions.

I really do not care what you think.

I would say the same, but if I did I’d think we’d both be lieing at least by the tiniest bit.

Ha!

Ah… to be monsters again!

Firstly, I think what you are saying is that the medium of gaming tends to be either child-oriented games or games involving killing. I happen to think even the child-oriented games are touching upon the same desire of the gamer - when Mario jumps on a turtle and it explodes or disappears it is the softcore version of a murder in a game targeted towards adults.

Secondly, when you speak of a death fascination within games I assume you mean the people who buy the games and create the demand and shape the nature of the market and its content. That in mind, I agree there is a difference between
the group that buys games and those that buy/rent movies and it would seem the first group has more violent tastes - but I put this down to the first group (gamers) not being as equally represented by the fairer sex as the second group (moviegoers), that it is not just gender we should consider but other factors too like the stigma of video-gaming being a result (in my opinion) of the medium not transitioning well from one generation to the next due to a largely commercially-planted assosciation with children and toys (I personally suspect this will phase out with the next generation or the subsequent one), and that the most important factor of all is the nature of game theory - I just don’t see how you could make most of the content usually included in narratives within literature and filmmaking into interactive pieces. There are people trying to do that (coders/artists) as I read recently in New Scientist but I don’t see a future demand for such games. For example, you could not take a character-based comedy or drama such as the recent hit ‘Carnage’ or ANY Woody Allen film and make it a fun interactive game.

get over myself… did i say it was a bad thing?

people here seem to be focusing on the idea of violence but i think that and death facination is different… while death normally involves violence violence does not involve death…
