We did experiment with normalish living spaces for prisoners back during the 60s, but found the recidivism rate didn’t improve, so chucked it. Norway follows our old program still, and their wardens aren’t sure if it improves it either.
When we give nin violence inmates privledges, they are still stuck in a single cell… can’t make their own food in their own kitchen, they might get lucky if they have the right warden and prison sentence to get radio, tv, non internet connected video game console or laptop. That isn’t luxury, it’s about where I am. I just got a small toaster oven so am doing slightly better than them in food preparation, my phone is a unimaginable luxury compared to what most get. Some get conjugal visits, I get none… putting a complaint in about that.
They really aren’t living it up. If I thought absolute brutality and bare bone living in a cell was better at reforming people, I be all for it. Isn’t from what I see with Mafias in the third world, it makes it way worst. Think each warden should continue having leeway over what luxuries each inmate gets. So long as it can’t hurt them or others, nor aid in their escape, I’m okay with them getting some things, over time. The threat of having those things yanked are a further incentive to play good.
I would also be open to a ex-con work shop (no more than two per state)… it will not under any circumstance provide a guarantee to work once they get out, but guys getting out of prison should be eased into halfway communities, if they so choose, working minimal wage for up to one year assisting in construction or labor for the state, with the condition what usually is paid out in taxes (like Medicare) is put into a bank account frozen till they leave the program, and they can use that to rebuild themselves financially. Can’t be used for automatic child support deductions either… we got too many homeless felons, it will give those wanting a chance to get a bit more of a cushion a chance. Piss tests and ranfom police searches/pat downs on site will be contractually required, you refuse, your savings are yanked back into their tax status and your fired.
Think a lot of employers will like to see that a convict can show up dependably to work, holding a job for the first year. Also think for the lowest tier of crime, we should rent their labor out to employers if the convict agrees, half their pay kept by the state, other half kept by inmate, put into a untouchable account, released once they leave. I’m talking, some woman in jail for stealing $100 of random shit from K-Mart, second offence, in jail for 6 months… and a shipping warehouse needs workers at X rate.
She is unlikely to run, and if does escape, we don’t have a armed and dangerous situation on our hands. She likely just get picked up later on and be ineligible for that program again as a flight risk. I under no circumstance mean murderers, rapists, or Hillary should be allowed in such programs, the risk of them doing something damaging to the public is too high.
