I’m one of those confused people who is still trying to figure out why the hell anyone would try to get into the country legally. I see the mess we’re in, and I really haven’t any good answers, but why even bother with a “border” when it means absolutely nothing? It seems to me we have legal immigration, or just get rid of the boarder talk and have immigration. If legal means nothing, what is the flap all about?
There were huge turnouts to the labour-day marches here in Australia yesterday.
The Howard government has just passed new industrial laws that many think will radically change the way workers work.
A few highlights:
In organisations with less than 100 employess workers lose the ability to claim for unfair dismissals. In large companies they can still fight unfair dismissals but there is a major loophole that allows companies to claim that the firing was “operational” and is therefore not unfair.
workers are being offered individual rather than collective contracts. The laws which allow these contracts make it technically possible for employers to remove overtime, benefits, shift allowances and weekend bonuses.
3.The minimum wage is to be set by a commission who’s stated aim is make sure the economy is competitive - not to make sure that all workers are fairly paid for their work.
restricted access to unions. No meetings on company time, workplace visits are harder, it is more difficult to organise, and penalties have been increased.
It will be interesting to see what will happen. People are already reporting questionable practices by employers. Workers are sacked and then offered their old jobs at lower pay. (That case was overturned but attempted nonetheless)
now if it only did anything positive. if you want to change the minds of the people you are mooching off of, and convinse them to let you stay, i suggest not demanding more. then if they give you a way to stay, take it, don’t ignore it and take from them
also if you don’t like the way people are treating you, where you are, leave, they probley don’t want you there.
