Music and Islam

I have seen videos of some Muslims breaking musical instruments

I have heard people singing when it’s time to pray for Muslims

So I’m quite confused. Is music, for Islam, approved or disapproved?

It’s prohibited for the most part unless it’s religiious nutjobbery like the invasive ‘call to prayer’ that they love to inflict on everyone (which isn’t really ‘music’ but a chant). Music is fundamental and there is something fundamentally wrong with an ideology that hates music.

Yeah, like those frickin’ church bells…

Regardless, Islam’s importance in the history of Western music can hardly be exaggerated. Thus Wikipedia says:

“Historically, Islamic art and music flourished during the Islamic Golden Age, and continued to flourish until the 19th century in the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal Empires. Ottoman music in particular developed into a diverse art form, and influenced Western composers of the Classical period.”

That tedious old ‘gotcha’. Yeah. Church bells once a week, muslim call to prayer 5 times a day, every day, a recording that’s blaring out over powerful loud speakers. Exactly the same.

‘Islamic’ golden age is a misomer. It only means that islam was tolerant at that time. and encouraged scientific and intellectual pursuits-- contributed to by people from many and varied backgrounds. Once islam became stricter and more literal the golden age ended.

Now that was uncalled for, “idiot”… Anyway, in my neighbourhood it’s far more often than once a week, and that’s per church, of which there are several.

Fair enough, but the same goes for religion in general.

“Strauss paints Zeus and the biblical God with the same brush strokes. Both jealously demand exclusivity and forbid the worship of other gods. Both are equally willful and capricious. […] There is no significant difference between the two gods. Will and caprice rather than reason and wisdom are their distinguishing marks.
For Strauss, the relation of Zeus and Metis is reminiscent of ‘the relation of God and wisdom in the Bible’. […] What is implicit here, as in the Bible, is that wisdom is associated with a woman; she is erotic and desirable. Love of wisdom or philosophy is therefore not love of God. On the contrary, it is a sort of competition with Him, an attempt to possess Metis”. (Shadia Drury, The Political Ideas of Leo Strauss, Updated Edition, page 47.)

  1. It is debatable whether or not it is prohibited. I’ve read arguments prohibiting it but they are typically (not always) unsound and Salafist. I’m not sectarian and Salafism is not a sect, it is more like a position, foetal position to be precise. The Salafist argumentation l deem weak. Salafism has been pre-empted by the Farewell Sermon of our Prophet (peace be upon him). One small part of the last sermon states: “All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly.” Salafism = adherence to the first 3 generations of Muslims. Yet the Farewell Sermon indicates that latter day Muslims might understand the faith better in some matters at least.
  2. It is said that one of the Signs of the End Times is some people will consider music and female singing to be lawful.
  3. Bear in mind that Music then, isn’t the same as now. Music then was all sexy crap. Music today is mostly sexy crap with a very small amount of real soulful stuff.
  4. It is said that wind instruments are haram. Others say yet more instruments are.

Let me also explain:

The Islamic Golden Age (which did exist, however much your genocidal ideation hates that, and part of genocide is to deny a people’s intellectual legacy) did indeed exist and was glorious, and Islamic, not other-than-Islamic, hence it’s called Islamic.

It gave rise to:

  1. The Lute entering European renaissance culture, and hence the guitar (regardless of the Lute’s antecedents, it was al-Oud to the Arabs —> Lute)
  2. The Do Re Mi So Fa La scale
  3. Even the mosh pit, probably. You can see antecedents in Indo Pak Sufi gatherings.

Actually, l worked on a type of “AI” music way back in 2012, it took a few years to complete. It wasn’t fully AI but it allowed me to create professional songs on the fly, without any rehearsal, almost like burning thoughts directly to hard disk. I used to make a lot of music, here was my setup:

Also: I used to have a decent vinyl collection, all but about 3 records now sold off (nobody wanted the remaining 3). It was making me sad to have all those memories. I didn’t want to hear the songs. Look at all the DJs that used to play rave, techno, hard house in the early days. They seem to disown the scene now. When you age you don’t feel it fits any more, and reminiscing is painful because everything is passing away. So, what use is music really?

It has to be good to be worthwhile. But then, also, what is good to you is not good to everyone. Other people may blast out annoying tunes. Do you want to hear commercial sellout rubbish, even fleetingly from a passing car? So, even with your own self, please admit most music is haram to your tastes and you would actively run from it.

P.S. Muslims will not have a call to prayer in a non-Muslim society (they aren’t even allowed to live in non-Muslim societies for one thing, but l don’t want to make the debate about this). For you to be fed up of the Muslim call to prayer tells me you are living in the Occupied Territories, in Palestine, perhaps?

In which case l find it galling that you would take someone’s land and condemn them for practising their faith in their own land. And l’m someone that used to spend his hard earned cash on Jewish music out of a love for music, you cannot stop turning people against you can you.

I’m not partial to indigestion, but thanks all the same for the offer of a huge pile of stodge. I prefer to eat healthily

Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera are the Four Horsemen.

I knew l forgot something: the military band was a Muslim invention, specifically Ottoman.

One of my favourites (melody sounds like it was from Ukrainian cossacks that went over to the Ottoman side?):

There are better quality Ottoman marches all over YouTube too. Welcome.

Oh and Bony M - Rasputin was an Ottoman song and a commonly heard prayer mode too:

Why are you using a different account? What is wrong with the people on here??

You know why i have never operated more than one screenname/member at a time? Because of my being totally deprived of healthy human interaction, I want more so than anyone else to be KNOWN and not mistaken, not someone different… one solid ass Bob Seger rock that has stayed the distance… the same fuckin guy running right beside you at half pace peering over at you, laughing and taunting you in your latest forum incarnation as you pant and cough all out of breath.

You couldn’t out-run em then and you can’t out-run em now.

I have a sense of pride in that, mates. That i have always been the Prom and that i have made sure you know him, exactly what he is… and isn’t.

The sock puppeteer must be one of two possible types. The self-esteemed missionary poster that isn’t starved of human interaction. Likely has a circle of nerd friends. Happy and excited to proselytize. His mission is to propagate his ideas by involving more members in them.

The other type is the extreme opposite. A low-life loner that obsesses and plots in a virtual reality where he can infect and affect people with his anger and frustration. Toying with people.

The missionary isn’t toying with people… only slightly deceiving them in a kind of white lie way.

Who finds it galling?

Maybe it’s “L”’s account, this time

The new ID is because I have a right to self-identify as a cat (ref: LGBTQIAAAHMPQCJ++) Ahem, I need not explain myself anyway.

Oh that’s just purrfect. Another cat person is all we need.

Like you ‘identify’ as mosslum

I am Muslim. Muslim are very catlike. Prudent and chaste.
