This still sounds like you’ve got a mix of window and system in your model of consciousness. On the one hand, you’re saying the world we experience is a representation (including ccognitive representations), but when we reference things in the representation (including cognitive things) we can sorta, kinda, get a little glimpse of what’s behind the representation, making the reference more window-like than system-like.

I also think we need to separate out what kinds of knowledge we’re talking about. I have no problem with scientific knowledge because science is still within the realm of experience. When scientists see an object in the sky being pulled around a region of space as though it were a gravity well, they infer a large planet or a black hole. That’s fine. The large planet or black hole takes the form of a concept which projects in the world of physics just as sensory experiences do. But where I hesitate to apply the label “knowledge” is in philosophical claims and the unimaginable. Philosophy is speculation and theory only. We have opinions and beliefs and logical deductions. Those don’t quite pass the bar for knowledge by my standards. It’s fine to have opinions and beliefs, just admit they’re opinions and beliefs, not knowledge. And then there’s claim of the unimaginable. These are by definition unknowable. Not unknowable in the sense that we cannot know of their existence, but what they’re like. My theory makes all sorts of claims about unimaginable experiences–like what if some animals can see colors beyond the familiar rainbow, colors we can’t imagine–but by that same token I cannot claim to know what it feels like to have such experiences, just that as experiences, they must adhere to the nature of experiences which my theory elaborates greatly on.

Why would my understanding of noumena help me with the problem of reference? Kant and I have the same problem. Do you remember my point that the infinite regress problem can revolve around three things?

Well, if you scroll up a few posts, you’ll find Part 1 & 2 of my solution to the infinite regress problem where I solve it for conceivability, but I don’t solve it for referentiality or knowability (the latter, in my opinion, depending on the former). At least if we can properly conceive of the things outside the representation, I figure, we can talk about them. Whether or not we’re right requires referentiality and knowability.

This solution, incidentally, when applied to Kant, means he has to take back what he says about noumena–that we can’t talk about them–for we actually can, and this is another way in which I differ from Kant.

Yes, that’s what I’m gathering from your point of view. You disagree with Kant when he says we can’t describe noumena in the ordinary language of phenomenal experience. You seem to be saying noumenal reality may share a lot of features in common with phenomena after all. But you also say everything we know about noumenal reality is a representation in the mind, effectively taking a Cartesian position that the representation is a copy of the represented (a system model of consciousness). This to me looks very much like 1 round in the infinite regress. Most of us who think about these things philosophically will do this–go 1 round in the infinite regress and stop, feeling comfortable with a representation/represented model. As children, we look around the world and take for granted everything we see–fully committed to the window model–space and time seeming absolutely real. When we mature, however, and we start think about these things intellectually and philosophically (if we’re so inclined), some of us come to grips with the idea that this is all a representation in our heads. But not wanting to abandon the idea of a real would, we simple take the first step in the infinite regress. We say, well this may all be a representation, but outside that representation is the real thing (and for the most part, we think of the representation as a copy of the real thing). That usually settles the matter for us. We feel satisfied and go on with our lives. I simply point out that the same realization can be applied to what you call the “real thing”. Just as the child wakes up to the fact that what she takes for granted is actually a model in her head, I try to wake people up to the fact that the “real thing” they take for granted in their representation/represented model is also a model in their head, a concept. And if you solve that in the same way–going for another round in the infinite regress–I will still be able to wake you up from that.

But in any case, I noticed a pattern in the way you describe the problem. I think it is we who refer to the referents inside the representation, but the referents themselves don’t refer at all. If it’s not something that’s right in front of us, we reference a concept. If I say, “The Great Wall of China is amazing,” I’m referring to my concept of the Great Wall of China. But my concept doesn’t refer to anything. The referring stops there. A concept is just an understanding of what a thing is. It’s a definition. To have the concept of a horse, for example, is to know how to define “horse”. But it doesn’t require referring to a particular horse. Or even all horses. It stands alone just being the “is-ness” of a thing. That’s why I have a problem imagining how referrences point beyond mental representations. A reference points to either the object itself (if it’s within our perceptual experience) or the concept thereof (if it’s not).

(Or at least this is how Kant is most widely interpreted afaik. I think no one knows for sure what Kant’s exact position was, not even Kant.)

Again no, it’s not just a concept in my mind and no, I don’t see where my picture has the infinite regress problem. You and Kant can be said to subscribe to one kind of wider circular philosophy: by assumption/definition you are trapped within your mind. I’m subscribing to a different wider circular philosophy, by assumption/definition my mind has an a posteriori spaciotemporal outside.

You’re trying to apply the assumption/definition of your system to my system, but my system isn’t based on that assumption/definition. If you can disprove my assumption/definition somehow, then I’ll throw out my system.

(There’s also the problem imo that if you can’t know anything beyond your mind, then you also can’t know that you’re trapped within your mind because you have no way to tell that. You can’t tell where your mind ends, what is and isn’t part of it. I think that system sort of perpetually shoots itself in the foot.)

No disagreement there. However more importantly, it’s just an assumption that natural “laws” are immutable, universal. They seem to be pretty stable where we live (if they weren’t, we would die, we couldn’t be writing here), but maybe they start to change elsewhere, say billions of lightyears away. There could also be other universes with different laws, different mathematics-es etc., who knows.

I see many problems with this.
What if say “our” mathematics is just characteristic of the particular observable universe we live in, and so in a sense it is an expression of that observable universe’s space and time and other features. (Maybe there are many different “the” number 5s. Personally I tend to think that there are.)
What if someone can imagine multiple “the” number 5s. What if it isn’t relevant what we can or can’t imagine.
Even if we can only imagine one “the” number 5, we can imagine two 5s. 5+5=10 in abstract mathematics, were they the same 5 or different ones? I honestly don’t see why they must be the same one. (Say, Kantians and Buddhists seem to think that reality tends towards nothing, towards nothingness, so as we eliminate features we are left with less and less, but who is to say that reality isn’t say forever infinite instead?)

I highly doubt that. I know the interpretation you’re talking about, but it’s hardly the mainstream view of Kant’s philosophy. The mainstream view I know of is what philosophers call the “two-aspect” theory, as opposed to the “two-worlds” theory. The two-aspect theory says that we shouldn’t think of phenomena and noumena as two different worlds, but two different aspects of the same world, or two different ways of thinking about it. We can think of the world in terms of its appearances (phenomena) or in terms of how it really is (noumena). But this doesn’t tell us that Kant didn’t believe the world as it really is doesn’t exist. At best, you’ve caught Kant in a contradiction. He says we can’t say anything about noumena yet you’ll find the word “noumena” fifty times in his Critique of Pure Reason. Obviously he says something about it, even negatively. It’s pretty clear Kant believes in the existence of noumena as that which appears (but not to be confused with the appearance itself), otherwise he takes the absurd position that there are only appearance but nothing that appears, and the vast majority of Kantian scholars don’t interpret Kant that way. Any way you cut it, Kant’s philosophy’s got problems, and I’m trying to solve them.

Aren’t we all trapped in our minds? I don’t know of anyone who can get out. Maybe some believe they can see outside their minds, but that’s like looking out the prison window and thinking you’re free. Anyway, I don’t know what it means for my theory to “shoot itself in the foot” but I’m more concerned with truth than with convenience. Sure, it’s more convenient to believe you have a connection to reality outside your mind, but is that the truth or are you just picking whatever theory is most convenient? Besides, my theory leaves plenty of room for knowledge. Since it equates perception and perceived, I can know all there is to know about my subjective world, which I take to be a full physical reality, but when it comes to the world beyond physical reality, I don’t think anybody can know about that.

Knowledge is an easy thing to miscalculate. It hinges on your epistemology. If a theory like yours says that we live in a representation, but that representation is more or less a copy of the world being represented, and that when we refer to things in the representation, that reference reaches beyond the representation to the thing represented, then you’ve got a formula for easy knowledge. But it still hinges on your theory being right. And as I said above, I give all due credit to science as a knowledge resource, but philosophy is speculation and theory only. That’s a much more challenging bar to meet.

Like I said above: whatever science discovers, my theory will always say it’s a representation of experiences outside the human mind.

Those two 5s are images on your screen. They appear in different spatial positions–one to the left of the +, one to the right–thus, they are physical (pixels on your monitor). Because if two things are identical in every respect, then the only way to tell them apart is if they occupy different positions in space and time. So if you remove those, on what basis can we say they are distinct entities?

Simply by viewing them as two identical distinct entities. We think/posit/know that there are two of them, and also that we can’t tell them apart.

So the mainstream interpretation of Kant is that noumenon is just a limiting concept, noumenon in the positive sense is unknowable, even whether or not it exists is unknowable. That’s how Kant avoids saying anything about it. Even in this annoying quote of his, which had me fooled too:

But our further contention must also be duly borne in mind, namely, that though we cannot know these objects as things in themselves, we must yet be in a position at least to think them as things in themselves; otherwise we should be landed in the absurd conclusion that there can be appearance without anything that appears.

He doesn’t say that noumena exist, he just says that we should be able to act like there could be noumena, be able to think that there could be noumena, for the philosophy to make sense. I think.

Well maybe you’re starting to see why referencing Kant many times had me confused. Whether or not noumena actually exist, has no effect on his philosophy. I think Hegel Schopenhauer Nietzsche Heidegger and others did what you did and started to talk about what the noumenon is like.

According to a Google search, Kant died in 1804, approximately 3 years after Thomas Young first performed and described his foundational interference experiments in 1801 - of which Young later refined and presented the formal “double-slit” context to detractors in a subsequent lecture in November 1803, which was officially published in 1804.

Why Kant Missed It

  • The Timeline: Young presented his first lecture on light interference in November 1801. Kant died shortly after in February 1804.

Well I’ll have to disagree with the AI. First, if we want the best metaphor for noumena, parallel universes and higher dimensions may be better than quantum superpositions. Because we have good reason to assume that the quantum superpositions do exist, while we have no good reason to assume that parallel universes and higher dimensions exist, we don’t know if they do or don’t. That’s closer to Kant’s noumenon, because Kant also doesn’t know whether or not the noumenon exists. Again here I’m basing this on Kant defining the noumenon as a limiting concept only.

Second, it may just be a fringe interpretation of QM that assumes that quantum superpositions are things-in-themselves behind the eigenstate appearances. Imo it’s more mainstream and makes more sense to say that superpositions have no appearances at all. That would be noumena that aren’t behind any phenomena, and the eigenstates that do appear have their own noumena.

I see no difference between identical brain processes existing twice and identical ideas existing twice. (Especially if those particular brain processes ARE those particular ideas.)

Although at least he does acknowledge that his CPR is an argument, not truth that can’t be challenged.

Can there be a center point without a circumference? The external objects are the circumference and the subject is the center. From the beginning, the acquired knowledge of the objects in the circumference brings into creation the subject. The subject is not the creator of the objects. It’s the other way around.

So the separation between you (subject) and the world (objects) only exists because we utilize knowledge to identify and experience things. Without knowledge, no separation is possible.

The mechanism of thought creates the space between an individual and objects. Thought itself is the space.

The self-consciousness or “I” is born out of the need to give yourself continuity through the continuous utilization of thought.

By the mental-material duality, do you mean the duality of perception and perceived, or the duality of mind and brain? If the latter, I totally agree. If the former, I still don’t understand.

The way I imagine the identity of the idea with the brain processes underlying that idea is as follows. All physics and materiality is a representation of the flow of experiences being had by the universe. These experiences are communicated to us via our senses, but in the process they transform and change their quality until they become the experience of sensation itself (the representation). They go from unimaginable qualities to imaginable qualities. All except for human brains. Human brains are physical/material representations no different than any other physical/material representation except that they represent human experiences, human minds (so quite imaginable). It’s the mind and its subjective experiences which are the real thing, the fundamental “stuff”, and the brain merely a representation of the latter.

But the mind, for the most part, is immaterial (abstract or metaphysical if we can use that term), so an idea contained in that mind can be one and the same as an identical idea in someone else’s mind (I know we’re debating this, but humor me for a second). The two minds “overlap” so to speak. But the physical representations of that idea, because they are physical, can exist in multiple places in space and time, in multiple brains to be exact. It’s analogues to how one can represent the number 9 in multiple places on a sheet of paper. One can write 50 9s all over a sheet of paper because the symbol 9 is physical. It’s made of lead or ink and it exists on the surface of the paper. The abstract (metaphysical) number 9 can remain a singleton while its representations can be multitudinous.

So it’s a one-to-many relation. I see no reason that would require dualism.

The self is just the person you see in the mirror. Philosophers and spiritualists like to think the self is only the “inner” self–the soul, one’s consciousness–and sure, that’s part of it, but I like basic grass roots definitions–the way common folk like to define things–the self is the combination of the inner self and the outer self. You ask, “where’s John?” and one will point to John–not John’s soul, not his inner mental life, his body (which, of course, comes with a soul and inner mental life–insofar as John is alive at least).
