1) Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (KAL 007) – 1983 Incident
Date: September 1, 1983
Aircraft: Boeing 747-230B
Route: New York City → Anchorage → Seoul
Incident: The flight accidentally deviated into Soviet airspace due to a navigation error. The Soviet Union, suspecting it was a U.S. spy plane, shot it down near Sakhalin Island with a missile from a Su-15 interceptor.
Casualties: All 269 passengers and crew onboard were killed.
2) Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (KAL 007) – 1978 Incident
Date: April 20, 1978
Aircraft: Boeing 707-321B
Route: Paris → Anchorage → Seoul
Incident: The plane strayed into Soviet airspace and was fired upon by Soviet fighters. It managed to make an emergency landing on a frozen lake.
The moral of this story is - if you are flying near Russia do not name your plane after JAMES BOND.
