You might want to look up the case of Phineus Gage. Whose “SOUL” (ahem!) was completely transformed with a steel bar, which was ejected out of an explosion and passed through his head.

The Phineas Gage story is one of dramatic brain damage. I’m not sure what exactly you suppose a theist must conclude from it.
Must a theist deny that brain damage can cause cognitive impairment? Why?
It’s not hard for me to imagine a metaphysical dualism that recognizes that the soul is mediated by a material brain in the material world is it? On the other hand, a monistic materialist must accept that there is no mind-independent object in his phenomenal world and that includes the brain as we imagine it.
To the monistic idealist the brain and its connections to cognition are merely mental facts. To the idealist, when you scoop out somebody’s brain from their skull, your perception of what you doing is no less mental than whatever the changes there are to that person‘s cognition.
What has to be explained is the causal relationship between brain damage and cognitive impairment. Must the holder of any of these three metaphysical positions necessarily deny that such a relationship exists? I don’t see why.
