I never actually read Brentano. I don’t have time to read every important thinker. Actually I don’t have time to read anybofy that isn’t Nietzsche. I’ve tried but I get bored after two sentences.
What I do do is trace genealogies. Brentano is like my sworn enemy because he (from a Catholic perspective no less, though he lacked the devotion for discipline and left) competently gave a new perspective to Aristotle that basically ultrapowered him and made him dominant for all sorts of avenues you wouldn’t expect, including the very man Freud.
It’s the very shit philosophy was made to overcome, and here it is looking like it has a good two centuries more of dominarion.
I’m just a fucking asshole and I got no one to report to.
My research on thinkers is mostly as a historian. I like to know where people’s “brilliant original ideas” actually come from, and they always come from somewhere.
But it’s just Nietzsche. He just fucking, he got there.
That’s a bunch of **** because many historians or people who make history get the philosophers wrong (much like many people who make/interpret history misinterpret the Bible to suit their own ends). So basically their influence is fake influence because it wasn’t really what they said.
I’m not necessarily reading historians per se. You’re looking for references and then you’re looking for snippets that correlate to something you recognize and you start putting the puzzle together.
Too manybtimes I thought “but maybe it’s different if you read them” and then I startbreading them and it’s exactly like I thought.
Is this an invitation to unload my beef with Nietzsche and watch you deal with it… ‘cause I really don’t feel like it.
I wear like a badge of honor the fact that it got me kicked out of class and reported to the disciplinary people of the college and I couldn’t attend the last day of class. Absolute honor.
