TRUE OR FALSE LIST Consider a list of 2000 statements:

1) Exactly one statement on this list is false.
2) Exactly two statements on this list are false.
3) Exactly three statements on this list are false.
. . .
2000) Exactly 2000 statements on this list are false.

Which statements are true and which are false?

What happens if you replace “exactly” with “at least”?

What happens if you replace “exactly” with “at most”?

What happens in all three cases if you replace “false” with “true”?

Hey Smooth,
I’ll have a stab at your riddles…

Answer1: All statements are false because each statement claims itself to be false. The statements are only true in that they truly refer to themselves as false. It is in their falsity that they are true. This riddle has the same affect as when a person admits that they are wrong. They are right in being wrong. Put another way, they are correct about their own error. To say “I am wrong” [when you are actually wrong] is to say that you are right that you are wrong. Which sounds like a riddle but makes logical sense.

Answer2: If you replace exactly with atleast there is an assumption that possibly there is more. But each statement encapsulates all the rest, hence the ‘atleast’ is brought down to the same meaning as ‘exactly’. An example would be if I said “Smooth we have exactly one sun”, “Smooth we have atleast one sun”, and “Smooth have at most one sun”. Because there is one sun “Atleast” and “At most” doesn’t affect the statement.

Answer3: same as answer2.

Answer4: All statements become true.

No I’m sorry to say but Gadfly your wrong about awnser 1.

There is one true statment on the list. The one true one is the one that says 1,999 staments are false. It is true that 1,999 statments are false and this one is true. 2,000 is false because if its true then its false. 1,998 can’t be true because it makes all the others false and likewise the others cancel each other out.

Awnser 2 your right to say is the same as awnser 1; but as awnser 1 is one true statment so is awnser 2. There is one true statment when you use at least, the one being there are at least 1,999 false statments on this list = true. 1,998 = false because if its true it’s the only statment to be true and therefore false and the rest will cancel each other out.

Are you being serious or joking?

Maybe I just really don’t understand.

:confused:

Well I hope my mind has not failed me, but I’m fairly certain that I’m right. I’m too lazy to go and think about the other secnarios will just hope that your right about those, goodnight.

I’ll translate an easy russian riddle. It sounds much better in russian because it rhymes.

A hanging pair,
but you can’t eat it,
what is it?

(1) 2894

(2) let me take a shot… a and b are 9 and 12, and c and d are both 6?

lol been doing some tickle IQ tests? :wink:

Underground Man, is it a pair of testicles? And are you russian?

OMG Gadfly plz give me the answer! :sunglasses:

A=6
B=9

or vice versa

C=6
D=12

or vice versa

= 72

7-2=5!

lol smooth no its not a pair of testicals, and yes I am russian.

Underground,

Does it have something to do with cards. Like poker has a hanging pair or something? I don’t know, I’m tired yet I can’t sleep, I might be hallucinating. :astonished:

a*b+c+d=5

ahh i didnt like that… :wink: hehe if u divide all ur numbers by 6, u have two 1’s, one 1.5 and one 2… then u could have 1.5*2+1+1=5… so a and b would be 9 and 12 and C and D 6’s…

Yeah I didn’t like it much either. I got it from a book, I didn’t like the fact that it doesn’t lead to any hint or clue that you can actually minus the 72, 7-2=5. I thought that was a bit of a stretch.

  1. It weighs almost nothing, yet even the strongest man in the world cannot hold it for long. What is it?

  2. My cow is dead, yet I continue to beat on her, oh what a noise she makes.

  3. A box hidden beneath a tree, inside some tasty meat. Leave it for a month or more, still as good to eat. What is it?

  4. If you put this in a bucket, then it will make the bucket lighter. (not a gas) What is it?

Sorry nothing to do with cards Heather.

Xanderman I think I got #4 is it a hole?

Oh man you folks are going to yell at me. I’m sooo sorry but I wrote pair instead of pear:blush: :cry: Please accept my humblest apologies I shall be much more careful from now on.

so the riddle is:

A hanging pear
but you can’t eat it,
what is it?

Now it should be easy to figure out again real sorry :blush:

  1. your cow is a drum

and another one:

What is it?

  • It’s greater than God –
  • It’s more evil than the devil –
  • The poor have it and the rich need it –
  • And if you eat it, you’ll die?
