Why is Schumer trying to run the airline industry? I don’t get it. If they don’t charge for carry-on, they charge somewhere else. Am I missing something?
It’s like ATM fees. It’s a good opportunity to stick up for the little guy. Little guys being frequent fliers, evidently.
And that’s all it is, right? I mean it just seems incredibly meddlesome. I’m no libertarian, but I can’t fathom why he and some others think it’s their business to get involved.
Yeah, I think it is. As you alluded to, the reason for these charges is so that airlines can advertise lower “top line” rates. Similar to “fuel surcharges”. On the other hand, it allows Southwest (I think) to advertise that “bags fly free”. If Schumer wants to help the flying public, maybe he could just lower federal taxes on tickets.
The carry-on fee would be augmented by an overall reduction in ticket prices, which is something that Schumer et. al. wont tell you. Just like they wont tell you that there are other airlines which would compete against those that would raise such fees, thus consumers would have choice as to which was the better deal, and just like they wont mention that no one has a fucking right to demand to use a conditional service, provided at someone else’s expense, without paying for it.
Then again it isnt about consumers or rights or the “little guy” at all, of course its about control and power and money. Implement more and more regulations, more and more taxes, more and more federal control everywhere and always, is the goal of these types of politicians. They dont care about the fact that people might have to shell out an extra $30 dollars for a carry-on; your inconvenience and malcontent is merely a means to an end, for them.
