I just would like to comment on the demonization of ‘money’ in this thread. Money is simply a tool to motivate the transactions of labour from one incumbent to another. Some individuals, the ones with virtue, do not rely on other people’s money because they pride themselves in their own accomplishments. To be able to produce something, become a contributive factor in it all. It is true that many of us find ourselves in a situation in which society leaves us no room to ‘produce’ something by our own accord (aka. being jobless). This is why I am a communist at heart because ultimately every person would get a chance to work/contribute/produce/be-active without general bias as such.
Not everyone either sees sex as the sole motivating drive and purpose in one’s life. Take the Dalai Lama for instance or a myriad of other renowned individuals. They in turn shunned sex as a way to focus on other areas of enlightenment in their own lives. Civilization indeed thrives with money, it itself only being a tool to facilitate the value and ardour that is put into one’s work. Money becomes an itemizing mathematical extrapolative object rather like the Abacus is to mathematical problems. Sure, everyone wishes for more money but think about it how much more valuable it would be to have accrued money by one’s own self accomplishments?
Eudaimonia, true eudaimonia (or eudemonia) can be only be achievable if one is at peace to oneself. I indeed wish I were given money but this just so I could better spend the money into things that would foster my own intellectual and life ambitions - aka sometimes. to create more money. The animal kingdom tells us a lot about money. Many species will hoard food supplies to last them through entire seasons even and to feed their offspring, this being equitable to money. Some bird species will be more unscrupulous and literally steal bits and pieces of other birds nests to glorify their own nests so as to attract a mate and ruin the chances of the competing bird to snagging a mate. Sex then becomes a matter of survival of the species where evolution plays a crucial role - survival of the fittest. Is this necessarily the right thing to abide in human sentimentality though? We, unlike animals, are imbued with a soul, and by every account one’s soul is worth just as much as any other person’s soul under God’s eyes.
Jealousy, envy, hatred are traits in humanity that should be avoided at all costs because it is against God’s will. If one chooses to pursue the path of money accumulation one should be attentive to the fact of leisure time lost (unless work is your leisure then that is a bonus and you are indeed blessed). The pursuit of sex should always be done so in a virtuous manner because, sadly enough, others are hurt at the thought that their sexual partner has/may indeed have been intimate with many others. Sex is an act that should accompany love, and love is the most sacred of human emotions and in order for it to be real, for civilization to foster as a loving one, we have to make certain that we are truthful in all our actions, words and deeds. Without being truthful to oneself, or to society for that matter, civilization cannot prosper forwards as there are certain charitable unalienable truths we in humanity cannot deny. Whether you believe in God or do not it does not matter… Civilization prospers forward with order and a good sense of justice, and it is only when we let go of the obsessive fixation of money and sex that we can enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of a sound mind in tune with existence and hence our surroundings.
I have only met a few individuals in life (very old ones at that) that achieved eudaimonia (see Aristotle if you do not know what it is - meaning to life the universe and everything in my opinion). Serendipity plays a lot in this pursuit but ultimately, as a God loving Christian, I believe that at one point in the next life therein we ALL achieve the same level of utter satisfaction of life, and so I hope.
Back to OP question… ‘Sex, Money, and Civilization’. Religion has paved forth civilization, sex ensured continuity of the species, and the advent of money improved our lifestyles due to the acquirement of specializations in professions. Sure, some see sex as a recreational activity, some see money as a symbol of power, and some do not really care about society at large other than their own ego centrical selves. There is a bit of truth to all of it, but one thing that can be learnt from some animal species (ie: ants, bees, etc…) is that communal awareness leads to a better life not only for the incumbent in question but everyone. A bit of consideration for your fellow brethren is my message in this quick spiel. lol
