Has anyone seen this? I never saw it advertised yet, this flick has a number of known actors in it. There really is no describing it. It does beg to be debated though. I barely moved throughout the flick and only paused twice. Which means I was glued. For 144 minutes that is astounding for me. If you have not seen it, get it. This flick has the earmarks of making a truly wonderful cult classic. I laughed through it and It caused thought. I am ready to see it again and i just saw it yesterday. I am certain I missed plenty of things in the first go round. Get it and enjoy then we can debate its meanings.
What! no one has any interest in this flick? Not seen it? Or heard of it? Ahhh, so disappointing. If you do get curious you can buy the DVD at Wal-mart. Probably blockbuster has it too or netflicks. some one see this movie OK. [-o<
No takers! Wow! I have a real star filled cult flick in my possesion! I figured at least one of you all would have seen it or at least heard of it. It is written and directed by Richard Kelly, the guy that did Donnie Darko. Come on that ought to get a couple of you going.
Donnie Darko was awesome. I’ve never heard of Southland Tales though.
We did not either. No advertisements No trailers on other movies. We saw it at Wal-mart. Saw a few of the known faces on it, read the description and bought it. I do not believe it ever was in any theater at least not down here. The dates on it are 2008. It is an awesome flick. I do believe this flick was done for pure art and love alone, not for mass consumption. If you can find it, buy it. You will want to see it more than once.
Ok last little bit about this flick then you all are on your own. It rewinds then changes some of the movie or so it seems and it does not rewind everytime nor have the same changes. Its not a rewind really it just replays from a point in the movie its not quite clear where it does it either. you are watching then your mind clicks that you have seen this scene before but it all blends together. There are more things about it but I won’t say what. This movie is a true work of art, if you can find it, get it, buy it. you need to buy it.
yeah, i just stumbled on this thread, i love southland tales. kelly at his best, although its a bit more chaotic than darko is. but everything about it is wonderful: the footage and camera work, the acting and dialogue, the bizarre quirkiness of the themes and settings, the music, the strange believability of some parts of the story. it sort of accomplishes that down-to-earth dirty real-world feel while at the same time managing to be science fiction and strangely “dream-like” at times.
and the story is great; i never read the comic or whatever its supposed to be based off of, but its an interesting plot thats for sure. “teenage horniness is not a crime”, haha so funny. i have to say, that The Rock did probably his best performance that ive seen in this movie. not the least of which because he has to play something other than a badass zero personality deep-but-quite-ive-been-hurt-but-im-too-much-of-a-Marine-to-show-it-even-in-the-end tough guy…
and ive been trying to puzzle through the plot a bit, i think ive got most of it but its still a little tricky. what i dont get still is why the world ends when they shake hands… i get that its two twin souls connecting together, which is supposed to be bad, and also that theres that injected liquid energy stuff in them also, so i guess that doesnt help either. but theres still that element of time travel with The Rock’s character that i dont get. why are there two of him? was he only useful to get the two of the police guy (i forget the actors name, sean william scott maybe?) (him and his ‘copy’) together in the end? i guess the ‘fate’ aspects which end up tying everything together at the end still seem a bit confusing to me… like the politics and all that, its interesting but is that stuff just backdrop or is it more relevant. does it matter that some anarchist movement is trying to take over the government spying program, or is that just background or filler to get you into the future-state of things? and the ocean-currents energy generator thing; i remember someone saying it was causing the earth’s orbit to decay or something? but i only remember one mention of it, i think, and i still dont know how this is relevant to the end of the world (which im assuming happens when the “brothers” hold hands, but we dont know for sure)…
ah, well, just like darko its fun to ponder. if you havent seen this movie, go get it, seriously. its a bit strange, and random, and bizarre at times, but the music and choreography sequences are hilarious and well done, and fit the feel of the movie very well. and the whole revelations-christian thing actually makes it sorta creepy, at least to me.
oh, and btw, this post contains some spoilers.
Someone finally found it!!! yea!!!, Do You own the flick or just rented it? You really need to see it more than just a couple of times. I don’t think you put spoilers in your post. Enticers perhaps. There are so many philosophical and theological elements winding together in it, you do have a couple of them right. I think some has to do with the world in his mind. Not the Rock but, the cop. The symbolism reminds me of a dreamstate, things that happen in dreams that mold our beliefs and thoughts. I have watched it 4 times now and am still seeing new things and getting more out of it.
yeah i netflixed it after a friend recommended it, and then i had to go buy it and watch it again. im going to probably see it a third time this week now that ive been thinking about it. i remember seeing tons of stuff the second time that i hadnt seen before, too. it just has that feeling that there is a hell of a lot of symbolism hidden in there, if you know where to look…
like, for example, how he thinks hes a character in a mystery story, or whatever that was all about, and that one chick buys into it and makes him believe it too, sort of… man, so many confusing paralells
and if you like kelly, you should check out david lynch’s films if you havent already. id recommend Mulholland Drive first, but if youve seen that, Inland Empire is about the most fucked up movie ive ever seen, bar none.
Thanks I will see if we can’t find that movie. Yea, I can’t quite figure the girl either but, Recall that the woman he is married to, has him believing he is something else all together than what the other girl does, they both love him, they lead him down different paths until at the end when he decides to lead them together in the last dance. The last dance I believe is supposed to symbolize the dance of life ending in understanding of destiny. I think, not sure yet The narrator is an interesting character to figure out too.
haha, yes agreed, timberlake’s character if i remember right. he did a good job in that movie too, i have to say.
as for mulholland drive and inland empire, they are… interesting. i would caution against watching them with the g/f or wife first, just because they are pretty disturbing. inland empire especially. they arent like darko or southland tales… but you may enjoy them, i do. just dont say i didnt warn you
I am a wife. I have lived with mostly just males all my life so disturbing things, are not disturbing, unless they pee on the toilet seat.
Violent artistry portrays the animal that we all are but, cannot admit too. Images that affect us, teach us if we let them.
cool, well sounds like np then
He was also surprisingly good in Alpha Dog.
yeah i agree. who would have thought?
