Spacestation

Ok so I’m sitting here watching the 11’oclock news and I found myself wondering. Why the hell are they giving this ridiculous amount of coverage to the spaceshuttle? I mean yes it’s important… but it seems like any middle eastern coverage has suddenly stopped.

(bear with the fact I don’t have cable here in res so i only get the local news)

But does anyone else notice this? Something’s up… there is always an agenda with the focus point in the television news… the question is what.

Preparing how they’re going to tackle Iran maybe?

edit: or am I just paranoid? like I said I don’t have CNN or fox news here to watch so this could be all me

what i always wonder about is how come man is set off to “conquer” space when we have so many problems here on earth :unamused:

anyways, i havent watched tv in a while, but i think you are just paranoid…

~thinks to self oh crap, another terrorist plot!! i need to go make some cookies…~

We don’t need to explore space, mearly protect ourselves against it. We’re long overdue to get a cosmic bumrush.

We explore space in part to help us solve the problems on Earth. And because we’ll one day learn to send a bunch of fuckers up to space that we don’t want to keep here.

The amazing thing is that we haven’t put much money into making new space craft and then find it shocking when they fall apart. Part of the coverage has to do with how exciting it is that this old bucket can make it back to Earth without exploding. It’s sad.

The real amazing thing is that we’re putting all this money into space when there are people like Old_Gobbo here who are suffering without so much as basic cable!

Oh, the humanity…

There’s a lot of space

The earth is small

By the laws of probability there’s more fun out there than down here so let’s strap ourselves in and enjoy the ride.

I can’t begin to fathom those who don’t want us to explore space. It’s like living in a city of 10 million and living your life without ever leaving your apartment.

Yes, it’s shocking that we still use the shuttle. Would you take a 25 year old car on a trip across the country? I wouldn’t. Yet we send up the shuttle even though it’s got millions of miles on it…

One thing at a time though Phaedrus… we need to protect against space before we explore it

How can we protect against something we know so little about? Did Piquard teach you nothing?

Well we know about asteroids, meteors and gamma ray bursts…

I dunno, I mean I’m not opposed to being in space… but we shouldn’t be focused too far from ourselves… cause we’ve got lots of problems, and could have alot more if an asteroid heads our way.

I think successfully interepting a NEO requires a much more advanced level of space technology than we currently possess. And I see no practical way to perfect that technology soley thru research on Earth. It seems to me we need more hands on experience in space to do that. But I agree with you that it should be a top priority. Presumably, we’re the first species in Earth’s history that would have the capabililty to avert such a disaster- our intelligence gives us that chance. But we need to advance our knowledge a bit.

Yeah, I agree.

And it would go alot faster if we could hurry up and unite the earth’s populace, if only partially. We’re misguided, but that misdirection stems from problems that we should just as easily be attending to – like we are. It’s ironic that the only thing that -could- unite the earth, and make us put our differences aside… would be an E.L.E event. Which is the thing we’re not focusing on (at least not really).

Oh man… all you can do is laugh sometimes.

I’ll bet 500 philobucks our solution for at least one aspect of space travel will be found at the bottom of the ocean.

Probably. Some scientists say we know more about outer space that we do about the floor of our own oceans. But I’ll admit, the romantic in me finds space more compelling. Probably all the Star Trek TNG I watched.

TNG! I love it

not enough Q episodes though… Q was so cool.

But yeah I mean who’s a better philosopher than Capt. Piccard?
