Subconscious Plagiarism

Before I knew it existed, a line and rhyme from a Keith Whitley song appeared in my poem Life on the Edge. The rhyme was cigarettes " if you got 'em" and “Life is a bitch at the bottom.” A few days ago I heard the Whitley song “Life is a bitch at the bottom.” The only song of his I remembered was “Don’t close your eyes.” How did those lines mentioned above appear in my subconscious? I had to go back to my poetry collection at Poetry Soup and ask that the second verse of my poem be omitted. This is not only baffling, it is disturbing. Can one create identical lines to a verse without somewhere, sometime hearing the original, even if one was unaware of hearing them?

welcome to my world lol

What does this song have to do with subconscious hearing?

Nothing, it just has the line “don’t close your eyes”.

Oh. That’s appropriate.

To be fair Ierrellus, even though it’s a very pretty line, it’s not one so unfathomable as for it to be unimaginable for two people to come up with it independently.

Language has a cadence to it, and certain words fit certain emotions pre-intellectually, by their sonority and cadence.

Not to mention the line is already composed of existing expressions.

You probably oughta ask them to put it back, and just tell them you had to confirm whether you came up with it independently or not.

And allow yourself maybe a grin that you and that singer both came up with the same idea.

Maybe you heard it on the radio and didn’t realize it.

None of it belongs to us anyway, it belongs to the muses.

Ah who’m I kidding, I know exactly what you mean.

As for disturbing, though, don’t be disturbed. It is possible, for the reasons I stated above.

Life is a bitch at the bottom
Ierrellus sweating stuff that’s unbottled
We’re all ants in the same cauldron
Or birds in the same colony
The air is free and so are we when we breathe it
God commands you now and then to concieve it
What’s the point of philosophy if it ain’t
Or art or science même
To glory in the fact of shareability
When we do well the glory of comparability
And understanding of human ability
A well so deep it recedes into obscurity
Individuality no more than a ticket to ride
Yes ticket to ride is also from a song I don’t mind
How can we be disdainful of others
If we don’t know how they got it wrong
What’s the point of cracking a maze
If we didn’t pit a mind against your own
The source is the same that makes the game fair
An instance of a human is attendance to the fair
So attend to your affairs carefully
In the knowledge that you’re participating ancestrally

I can go along with accidentally matching the line “Life is a bitch at the bottom.”, but the exact rhyme with “Give me a smoke if you got 'em.” is a bit more perplexing. I’ve been able to hear a song playing on the radio before I entered the room where I could consciously hear it playing. Maybe that’s how I got the rhyme and the line. I doubt there is anything supernatural about this. It’s a fluke of the mind.

It’s called “Subliminal Messaging”, Subconsciousness, Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis, etc.

It is a very real phenomenon. Look into Sigmund Freud, Edward Bernays, and Carl Jung to learn more.

Modern Marketing use such knowledge to advertise, profiteer, and propagandize all peoples across the planet.

I had missunderstood your telling, didn’t quite catch that you also had written both lines (most of both).

Probably the radio. When something is catchy, it certainly doesn’t have to register in your consciousness for it to be recorded in your thoughts.

Stuff that is part of the general culture tends to repeat - that’s why it’s part of the general culture. Something about it works… resonates with what makes us human. If we didn’t have that baseline, we wouldn’t have culture. The existence of culture is evidence that there is something about us that makes us human…before we even try. Sometimes it is hard to suss out the baseline from the evenly distributed stuff that resonates. That’s the nature/nurture thingy…but there is more to culture than mechanical conditioning (nurture/reason) of the baseline (nature/understanding). Can you guess the third thing? If not, see my harmonic triads thread.

We are not merely natural. (Psst… As I’ve said previously, even nature isn’t merely natural.)

God is the one who opens eyes and ears, hearts and minds. We are supernatural subsumed under/within Supernatural. We, and the fruit of our minds that is in line with the eternal, and not nihil. Cocreators. When it comes to burning up the nihil, we are codestroyers, supplanting with a bigger Yes.

pretty sure

This makes sense. Way back in the 1930s Aldous Huxley wrote “Brave New World”. In that “futuristic” society subliminal messaging was the means of education for the young. They were indoctrinated as they slept. I think Huxley recognized subliminal messaging in advertising back then.
