SYM·PO·SI·A: It's here!

Dear all,

SYM·PO·SI·A is here!

http://symposia.ilovephilosophy.com

After much toil and sweat (well, metaphorically anyway), SYM·PO·SI·A is finally here. SYM·PO·SI·A aims to be an online collection of knowledge and wisdom containing articles, creative writing and reviews written by people all over the world, and hopefully you guys too.

I urge you all to go over there, have a read of the articles already in the database and to contribute. All of you have got it in you to submit something of worth to share with the rest of us, so don’t be scared to do so. The categories are very similar to the forums we have here (apart form Mundane Babble of course!).

Contribution

Your contributions at SYM·PO·SI·A will not go unnoticed. Thanks to km2_33, anyone who contributes an article will be able to display this under their name:

And for star contributors there is the even more exciting:

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this project, especially the staff, the ThinkTank folks and km2_33. I hope it will be a useful addition to the ILP community and to the online philosophy community at large. Obviously this project will only work if people submit stuff to the archive, so I really would encourage you to give it a go!

Obviously this project is only in its early stages so if you have any questions/comments/queries please refer them to the Help&Suggestions forum.

Here’s to a successful SYM·PO·SI·A!

Ben

Isn’t this just another version of the Philosophy Heavily Moderated forum? I don’t think it is a good idea because you only read what others say but you can not interact. Knowledge stored there is dead knowledge, not living knowledge we have on ILP.

it would do you some good to read a fucking book. but since that involves time and patience and integrity… you might well read a shorter essay… and might i recommend mine on carnap and quine/metaphysics… which i wrote a long time ago, and is not very good… but for you… fine.

I did not select my poems, those were chosen by the editors, and posted with my approval. Just wanted to make that clear. I agree with PoR that the living form of discourse (giving new meaning to the word POSTmodern art) has created a tree with branches that yield sweeter fruit when eaten in context. If you don’t know me, you might not get the full irony of some of my poems. If I have any talent at all, which is questionable, it has displayed itself far better over the volumes of delicate interplay than it ever could in isolated works. But enough about me. Good luck to the editors of Symposia. I encourage you all to contribute your best and get it off the ground. I hope to see my works replaced by real works by real poets sometime soon, and Monooq’s essay replaced by one from AC Grayling. Cheers.

Sidenote, I have a new compendium of all my 4-track songs dating back to 1993, an anthology of homemade demos, mostly three-minute pop songs and errata ala GbV. It’s pretty strange and deceptively good I think, with Beatles, Big Star, Kinks, Zappa, early Who, Femmes, Ramones and other eclectic influences – if anyone wants to review it for a possible Symposia acceptance that would mean a lot to me.

Are your songs hosted somewhere else or would you need hosting? Im sure we’d be interested in looking at them!

Yeah, well I was beginning to wonder…about the criteria for poetry selection – especially since I’ve started writing little Hiakus. O:)

Yeah I think they just needed some content to get started. Ben has a fixation on a few of my poems, not sure why. But he be the bossman. There are several better poets at ILP, I admit. Anyway, I’m grateful and honored, and I do like some of the stuff on there.

Obw, I don’t have anything online ready to listen to, as of yet just a 2-disc anthology comprised of 33 tracks. I’m selling it at CD Baby in a few weeks, but for now the best I can do is email mp3s, don’t know how to post them anywhere.

There are no specific selection criteria for poetry, just a general sense of standards. Please feel free to submit your creative work for consideration…

I don’t know about mp3s. They’d be a cool thing to include but would anyone but you offer any? It’s up to someoneisatthedoor so far as content goes. At any rate music files would need to be remotely hosted so as not to kill our bandwidth too quickly.

alternatively you could create an ILP greatest hits and we can sell it for you

I’m perfectly happy with music if we can find a way to host it…

So who is going to be ILP’s first ever Star Contributor? Did we decide what make someone star yet?

I don’t even remember a conversation about the little tags (good to see that I haven’t got one…) so I’ve no idea what makes someone a star contributor. I suppose a certain number of contributions of a given standard within a certain timeframe would be appropriate.
