oh wow… thanks to this board i heard about Synergetics. i’ve only been reading the book for 2 days but GOOD LORD i can feel the change happening. who here has read any of this? how did it/does it relate to your own philosophical worldview? has it changed the way you think about things?
how do you begin to understand the …geometry of it? the diagrams are challenging to say the least.
i apologize for not having anything more substantial to offer to this discussion. i’m creating this thread to get the gears turnin’ for myself, and to hear the thoughts my ILP colleagues.
I have Mr Bucky’s book. It was recommended to me by an amyl nitrate dealer who was a customer of mine when I was waiting tables in New Orleans. I swear to god on the truth of what I am saying. I have not yet read the book as frankly, it scares me. I’m traveling on a whole origins of violence reading bus. When I arrive at my destination, I will pick up my complexity books again. By the way, have you read 1000 years of nonlinear history yet?
no i haven’t! i’ve just been bumming books off of the internet, printing them out at work …my reading time has been seriously cut into by …hanging-out-with-girlfriend-time. i never thought watching stupid movies while sitting for hours on a couch could actually be better than the further expansion of my mind. anyway, “1000 years of nonlinear history”. that is next on my list when i’m no longer broke!
Greetings DarkMagus,
yes I have come into contact with Synergetics. I have in fact been studying Buckminster Fuller for a number of years now. I have read numerous works by Mr. Fuller and yes he has really changed my life. I consider Mr. Fuller a true genius in all senses of the word. He is my hope and inspiration of changing the world, its politics, economics, and to totally change the way people think. But it’s hard work. Especially when you have to attend University, have a job, and still keep a working relationship between parents and friends.
There is more to Fuller than just geometry. He has poems, inventions, cars, houses, cities, and a totally new way of thinking that he thought up.
But yes even his geometry is revolutionary. I stumbled upon Fuller in my first year of University and haven’t looked back since. When I read his works I almost feel like crying because I finally have found someone who thinks and feels like I do. More importantly, he has shown that one ordinary human being can do so much, if only they care enough and put enough effort into it.
I haven’t actually read his work on Synergetics, even though I have a full text copy of it on my computer. But many of his ideas recur throughout all his works. So if there is anything specific you would like to discuss, let me know, and I will tell you if I am informed about it or not. Regarding the works I have read:
Education Automation, Freeing the Scholar to Return to his Studies
Operation Manual For Spaceship Earth
World Game Scenario
Presently I am in the middle of reading Critical Path.
…So if you have any questions in reference to anything within these works, feel free to ask.
That May be, but I have seen the effectiveness of the Bucky Dome as an architectural structure. I have a friend here in Florida whose dad is an architect. He build a Bucky Dome as his house and apparently this thing can withstand 150 mile an hour winds like it was a Sunday afternoon breeze.
Sounds like you’re the resident Buckminster Fuller expert here! I’m psyched to hear that you’ve read/studied him pretty extensively. I was really hoping that someone could share some knowledge and help me learn some stuff… as i have JUST stumbled across his stuff this week! Actually, what you said about his work changing your life really hit home, even though i’m so new to his stuff… as a perpetual student of metaphysics (and fledgling metaphysician) myself, reading just a few chapters hit me really hard. I felt immediately as though he was articulating things that i had had vague thoughts of, but hadn’t yet been able to put into words. A couple of choice examples:
particularly the second quote… its so perfect. i just “know” its true
anyway, i’ll be continuing to read and i’ll come back with some more specific questions/topics. thanks for replying!
whitelotus,
lucky for you I have accepted a much more passive role on this message board. When you put someone down, especially when you put someone in a light as failing, you would do much better to know exactly what you are talking about. To most, who have had only a brief encounter with philosophy tell me that it is the stupidest thing they have ever heard. But I have never met a person that has delved into atleast 3 different philosophers and not come to love philosophy. In my opinion, when you said…
…you couldn’t have been more wrong. Bucky looks at math in a much more down-to-earth way. He does away with much of two dimensional (unempirical idealisation) thinking. You really need to read more of his works to understand.
You said:
I have fought long and hard to show people that mathematics isn’t totally connected to the actual, so in this sense I agree with you. But to say that what is mathematically possible is WHOLLY disconnected from what is physically actual is an extreme I disagree with and know to be wrong. Math originates from our physical reality as we see it. Beauty of math is that it can transcend that which it originated from.
You said:
Really? How does he do this?
You said:
Yes this is correct, but what have you said? Nothing. Ofcourse there is a reason he never caught on, though he did, just not in the sense you would have liked him to. In your biased and arrogant studies of Fuller you may find a section where he talks about how his dymaxion domes were purchased by major power countries around the world. His Dymaxion Car was almost put on the market but an unfortunate accident happened. Many of his patents ARE in use today by scientists all over the world. As a philosophy major myself I can tell you that his philosophy is impeccable. I haven’t delved too far into his views of economics and politics, but the depth I have reached indicates that he understands economics and politics well, atleast the way politics and economics were when he was alive. He was known on a personal basis by both the Chinese and Russian presidents…you don’t get to this level without being able to understand or articulate yourself in the context of politics well. He made several visits to the white house to make presentations and seminars to advisors and cabinet members regarding his revolutionary views. Again, you don’t get to this point without being ACCURATE, as you say, about politics, economics, and history.
But then again, your arrogance appears high enough to not accept a single thing you read, whether it be my posts or Fuller’s works. So please, feel free to accept this as mundane ramblings of someone who doesn’t know anything and simply latched onto Fuller because he was needy of an idol, didn’t think, didn’t study or research fuller, and simply chose him as a genius on whim.
This is a better link that skips over that part about what kinds of emails he most often gets, since this can be confusing as to where exactly Synergetics is [you have to click NEXT]…but I have conveniently provided a link that takes you right to the contents page of Synergetics…
