That Famed Purpose of Life

To give a description that is in any way accurate you need experience and intersubjective agreement. The solypsistic or nihilistic view you give is a reduction of knowing to the type of relativism that can negate any and all human understanding. Evolution and development of matter as an energy/material exchange does not exclude particulars, wholes or complementations or our descriptions of necessity that prove to be socially and individually practical.

What is it that prevents you from living simply and harmoniously in this world if you do not bother with descriptions, experiences or agreements?

Is there a precise understanding of what it is to be human? Isn’t being human a state when you stop trying to model yourself after some perfect understanding, when man ceases to pursue the goal of a perfect man?

Necessity? The extraordinary intelligence of the biological organism is all that is necessary for good living, but we are all the time interfering with its natural operation through the medium of thought. All that is necessary for the survival of this living organism is already there. The tremendous intelligence of the body is no match for all that we have gathered and acquired through our intellect.

Mind or thought is not yours or mine. It is our common inheritance. There is no such thing as your mind and my mind. There is only mind, the totality of all that has been known, felt and experienced by man, handed down from generation to generation. We are all thinking and functioning in that thought sphere just as we all share the same atmosphere for breathing. So where is the individual there?

Good, I hate having to sell the basics Soooo… often. 8-[

The “melody”, a very apt terms, is the simultaneous processes of the effort to live or maintain one’s security. The collection of all of the processes is “Life” (the abstract basics). I expired almost the entirety of my life (which could have been Much happier) seeking out exactly what Life is (and isn’t). And it finally came down to one not so simple formula composed of all of the multiple processes that must simultaneously function for a life to proceed;

Life’s Process;
[Clarify, Verify, and Remember] the [Hopes and Threats] toward the [Maximum Momentum] of [Self-Harmony].

That formula that IS Life (every life) contains 4 fundamental concepts;

1) Awareness of surroundings - the effort to Clarify, Verify, and Measure
2) Incentive to proceed - what to be aware of so as to provide the drive is the potential Hopes and Threats to the effort/process
3) Direction - the fundamental priority for sake of decision making Self-Harmony
4) The target goal-state - the degree that marks the state of “perfection” - Maximum Momentum

The closer one gets to reaching that maximum, the more certain they are of living eternally. If reached to the point that there is no longer any greater momentum to challenge, life is guaranteed to be eternal (there would be nothing to stop it). There is not a step by step map, “always do this first then that then that…”. The process begins where ever it is born and immediately proceeds to figure out how to continue. Life is a seed that might be planted upside down. The process resolves all relevant issues such as to more ensure its continuance, Self-Harmony.

“We” are confounded, corrupted, and divided within our selves. Our instincts are maligned with our emotions that are maligned with out conscious rationale. We are anything but in harmony within. When you get to that point, if you ever do, you will very seriously see the difference and not need to guess about it. In effect, you become like Gautama (Buddha) and/or Jesus, and others. If you proceed to teach afterward, you are what they call, “Bodhisattva”.

What you ARE is the combined processes/efforts that achieve;

1) Awareness
2) Understanding (including emotions and instinctive associations)
3) Influence (Higher Momentum)
4) Drive/Spirit

ALL life on Earth has proceeded from that one formula coming together by whatever means. The more you attend to it, the longer you live in harmony.

I might add that the very active effort of your intelligent adversary is to see that you DON"T attend to that process. Look around you and you can easily see the earmarks of the adversary to your life.

I don’t believe that one unless you mean it in some strange way or merely by definition of opposites.

Due to entropy, life expands and grows so as to consume the chaos. But if there were no chaos, the life would continue eternally anyway. Life has NO need for chaos except as something to cast into an adversary. But life needs no adversary other than the awareness of the potential to deharmonize IF it doesn’t act - the potential to suffer and/or die, IF identified action isn’t taken.

The idea that entropy came first is bogus. Harmony and entropy of the entire universe cycle endlessly and have been eternally.

So how is it that life is “by virtue of entropy”?

There are no opposites; there are positions on the wheels of cycles.

Only in the mind of man, in his thinking, is there the idea of opposites. Swinging like a pendulum from one end to the other, that’s the movement of thought. It is always between pairs of opposites.

You cannot conceive a state of being where these pairs of opposites do not exist at all. It’s so unnatural – the unnatural thing accepted as natural. That is our tragedy. That‘s never questioned, because, if you begin to question, your existence is at stake. You are that. You are not different from this movement of thought.

The problem with man is that he has been subjugated by the thought culture which has an immense hold on him and which has created the notion of the self in him. This precludes the living organism’s interacting with nature. That is to say that the self has separated man from nature. Thus man with his self-centeredness leads a duplicate life as a hypocrite, leading himself eventually to destruction.

The innate natural intelligence of the organism is fantastic. The acquired intelligence is no match to it. For example, the body’s defense mechanism lies in its immune system. In fact, the best organized system in the body is the immune system that functions without our intervention. The immune system has nothing to do with the intellect. It does not work at your will and pleasure. It acts spontaneously to respond to a challenge. It is innovative and it operates in a clearly defined fashion.

Matter at the fundamental level is a picture of chaos beneath order. At that level there is a confusion of continual creation, annihilation, and transformation. Above this confusion, limiting the forms that it can take, are a set of conservation laws. They do not specify what must happen, as ordinary laws of physics do; rather, they specify what cannot happen. They are permissive laws. At the subatomic level, absolutely everything that is not forbidden by the conservation laws actually happens.

Life draws its components from the environment. From the vast mass of chaotic probability flowing by it extracts only distinctive improbabilities, the little bits of order among the general confusion. It uses some of these as a source of energy which is obtained by a destructive process called digestion. From others it gets the information needed to ensure its survival. This is the hardest part – extracting order from disorder, distinguishing those aspects of the environment that carry usual information from those which simply contribute to the over- all process of decay. Life manages to do this by a splendid sense of the incongruous. Life also protects itself from the ceaseless bombardment of millions of conflicting signals like sound waves and electromagnetic waves by using sense organs, letting in only a limited range of frequencies. Life systems select information from their surroundings, process it according to a program that entails survival, and supply an output order. The cosmos itself is a patternless jumble of random and disorderly events. Life makes patterns out of patternless disorder.

If I said I think life revolves around power,pleasure, and sex what would the reply be? :slight_smile:

There’s my famed opinion on what the purpose of life is.

Don’t you have to use or involve someone or something to experience that? What if that temporary mutually gratifying relationship breaks down?

I would ask “what purpose” were such instincts serving? And I would eventually answer that they were serving “the effort to protect and maintain Self-Harmony”. :sunglasses:

I don’t understand your question. In my opinion what I have stated all individuals strive for more or less.

Self harmony. :slight_smile: I like that.

It’s always interesting the madness, trouble, and conflict people are willing to get themselves into just to have a ounce of self harmony.

It kind of reminds you of the teenager who anxiously worries and plots for hours what he is going to do when his parents discover that he hasn’t taken out the trash yet. #-o

Or the father that spends all Christmas day trying to figure out how to put the toy together without reading the directions. 8-[

As you see then, all of thinking is embedded in a structure.
This structure is not anymore artificial however than any component of out being - it’s polarity probably derives directly from out anatomy.

You can not reject it, cast it aside, ignore it - but you can transcend it, by charging the polarity to a point where fusion of the poles is possible. Then you have to propceed and make that fusion happen. Since most people dont treat their mind as an object but simply obey it, most people will never get to the act of fusing the opposites. It is a strange, perhaps even unethical operation, the act of drawing together the boundaries of the dualistic order of the mind, creating (temporarily, until it breaks down into polarity again) another type of order, a direct, immediate mind, as directly perceptive of necessity and possibility as the immune system. ‘Beyond good and evil’.

Wherever one identifies the self as the location of this pendulum, the self is bound to be endlessly corrupted.
This is ancient wisdom - do not attach to the motions. The act of attaching is an act of the self - the self can also choose not to attach, as in Buddhism, - or as I described above to attach to both sides at once and unite them, as in Tantra.

The mind indeed has a long way to go to reach the effectivity of the immune system. The current state of the intellect is extremely sluggish and counterproductive. But that is because it has no continuous function. It can idly occupy itself with whatever nonsense is at hand. Whenever a potent intellect is put to work on a difficult project for a duration exceeding it’s stretch, it’s confort zone, it will gradually ‘‘heal’’.

Exactly. These conservation laws are the necessities by which order is assimilated into order.
At nauseam I repeat, a good numer of these can be found through geometric construction with only the circle and the line.

Beautiful ode to the power of the organism. But the same functionality that “[f]rom the vast mass of chaotic probability flowing by […] extracts only distinctive improbabilities”, is also present in inorganic matter. The same necessities by which an organism extracts information from chaos, are responsible for the formation of stars and the curvature of galaxies.

The past is always active. If the past ends, the self, which I shall henceforth refer to as ‘you‘, ends. That is the reason why you will never allow that, no matter how hard you try. The past is everywhere in you. Every cell in your body is permeated by it. Every nerve is involved in it. The past has this body so much under control that it will not let it go. The past will not come to an end through any effort you make or whatever will power you effect! The more effort you put into it, the more willpower you use, the stronger it becomes. You came across many insights in this process, but every insight reinforces the past. It does not in any way help to understand anything and to thus free yourself from whatever. Every insight that you obtain with your investigations only strengthens and solidifies that.

Thus… what should you try to do in such a situation? NOTHING, NOTHING AT ALL! Nothing, no power in the world can help you, period. Thus, as long as you remain dependent on any authority outside of you, you remain hopeless. Once you understand this clearly, there is no more helplessness, your helplessness no longer exists. The you actually don’t know what to do. This is the situation where you have to arrive, no longer knowing what to do. And, if you expect that something will happen from what you then call your ‘clarity of thinking’, or your ‘meditation’ or something similar, then you are lost forever. Because that is not the true clarity.

What about the, albeit speculative and mind boggling, relationship between black holes and quasars? Some physicists believe that black holes suck matter from one universe and pump it into another universe or into another part and time of the same universe. Thus the output side of a black hole is a quasar. If the speculation is correct, then the matter in our universe is being sucked into its many black holes, only to reappear in other universes, while matter in the other universes is being pumped into our universe, which is again being sucked through black holes into other universes. This is a process that goes on and on feeding on itself, another beginningless and endless process. Thus order and disorder occur simultaneously in nature. The matter in the universe is destroyed and simultaneously recreated by the two process of black holes and quasars respectively. Black holes represent disorder and quasars represent order.

I have no idea why you’re telling me this finished - nobody says we have to get rid of the past. Evidently, our body literally is our past. Getting rid of it would mean death.

Nihilism as a necessary stage on the path to affirmation and power is an interesting subject, but it is an unnecessary side track from the topic of the thread. Too much is about nihilism already. It’s the stage most people who get interested in philosophy are stuck in, or try to come to terms with. James has explained that he went through a prolonged stage of not knowing what to do. I think this is not unfamiliar territory for most of us here. What’s interesting is that he found a way out.

You have a backwards idea of meditation and clarity, as far as I understand and apply the concepts.
My take: no successful action is possible without it. It’s what separates evolutionary success from failure - the capacity to be clear at the right moments. This is a hereditary gift which can be cultivated or eroded.

I wish I had something else to say to this but “and?”
How does all of this touch on, or as you seem to think, challenge or contradict what has been said before?

If life is said to have purpose, the purpose is to adapt rather than to die. And, from our human self-oriented perspective, it is to leave memes that outlive us.

I think that falls into the category of “Plan B”. 8-[
