Well, the smartest man in America, i.e., IQ of 192, is a bouncer for a bar, and lives in shack, a shanty. You would never know it.
Until you get him talking about astro physics and quantum theory, then you can’t even understand him.
Genius is just a label for high intellect, and as per the example given, isn’t necessarily indicative of anything, including duty.
It’s true that the original posting didn’t exactly sound like it was generated by ultimate genius. But what the hell is wrong with you people? You come across as VERY insecure.
I mean, think about it.
No one is better equipped than a genius to identify his own genius. Why do people attack everyone who says “I am a genius”? Question his claim, sure… but attack? Very lame.
Someone of phenomenally high intellect can still value the opinions of others, and might decide to ask our opinions on what he should do with his power. Maybe he already has his own opinion. Maybe he’s emotionally insecure about the power of his genius. Having an astronomical IQ doesn’t mean you’re emotionally stable. It doesn’t even mean that you’re a precise thinker.
There IS such a thing as smarter and dumber people. Is SomethingElse saying that he’s smarter than we are? Absolutely. And there’s not a damn thing wrong with this. There is someone out there smarter than all of you, and that’s all there is to it. Maybe SomethingElse is such a person, but even if he isn’t, there’s someone else who is. Deal with it!
Your friend in high school who said he was the smartest person he had ever met - he probably WAS the smartest person he had ever met. He probably WAS smarter than you. If he wasn’t, and was being a jerk, call him on it. But if he was… what’s wrong with that?

Actually SomethingElse can’t logically make the claim that we will not meet someone of higher intellect, that borders on ludicrous.
Personally, I never “met” him.
This is the internet, and there is no manner with which to test his statement.
It is likely that I have already met someone whose intellect will remain unmatched in my lifetime/life experience.
Surely, this is a jest. If not, then the original poster is dubious at best, as those comprised of intellect so untouchable … wouldn’t be wasting time in an internets forum.

I would like supposed genuises to stop talking about how smart they are and go and fix some of the worlds problems. Here’s a few to start with: starvation, the unfolding ecological disaster, our unsustainable lifestyle, and opression.
I expect that such a person, if they existed wouldn’t be eager to tell everyone else how smart they were, and how immature everyone else was, and get around to solving some problems.
I would STFU about how smart I was and how hard it was to be so smart and go out and fix some fucking problems.

A intellectual genius is like an engine with internal combustion running in lost motion - it combusts internally, without moving any crankshaft. The processes that go on inside a genius are an unfathomable mystery to everyone (even the genius himself and often resemble) the cataclysmic turmoils of a volcanic eruption. A true genius is always underrated during his lifetime, because he is always in a state of constant renewal and change. His ideas will only serve as basis for new, personal ideas. Therefore, a genius is of no practical use to anyone. Not until he dies, anyway. Only after that one can say his work is complete.
To assert yourself as a genius is no more than empty prattle, as it doesn’t point out to anyone in special way and it is of no public interest. Be a genius in your own time, in your own space, in your own circle of ideas. History will decide if you deserve any attention.
I can conclusively answer the initial question:

I’m kind of shocked that no one has brought Socrates to the table (or, if they have, it was during the latter half of the second or third page, which I skimmed through. As you probably know, one of Socrates’ best (in my opinion) contributions to philosophy, via Plato’s writings (found most plentiful in the Apology), was his notion of intelligence: That the truly intelligent man knew that he knew nothing.
A genius’s job, then, is to try to learn…to try to fill in the gaps of nothingness, even though it will enable him only to see deeper gaps, and the nothingness within it.
Perhaps, keeping with the theme of Socrates and Plato, one could extend this idea further to Socrates’ own declaration of purpose, as the “fly upon the horse’s ass” …or as the antagonist/protagonist of a given society, there to stop it from stagnating, simply through the act of constant inquiry and exploration.
And now, mr. Quote, its time for my rephrasal. Perhaps a better idea would be that:
“No one is better equipped than an idiot to recognize his own genius.”

I am sorry to say you appear to me as not being within the category of the smartest people on earth. A person who has intelligence on the highest step of the highest ladder will not write I would like to hear from you within such a situation. Clearly it is obvious that you will most likely not hear from these people but rather you will read what they have written. Your written expression does not coincide with your meaning behind it. I would like t o know where your illuminated insecurity derives from?
