I agree that neither of us has hard evidence. And let’s be clear: “many stories” are not evidence. Germany has a population of more than 83 million, and about 13 million of them are foreign born. Look through that many lives, and you can find many terrible stories. The stories are not a random sample, they’re picked for sensationalism, and pushed online to advance political agendas.
Stories are not representative and don’t support conclusions about immigrants and crime.
And in the absence of evidence, you should stop spreading the idea that immigrants are particularly criminal or pose a particular threat.
I found a couple maps that might help us: Two maps of Germany, one of the percent of non-migrant population by state (higher/darker = fewer immigrants) [1], and the other of crime per population by district (higher/darker = more crime)[2]:
I don’t think this is particularly strong evidence, but I don’t see a clear pattern here. Should there be?
One response is that this is all non-migrants, and a good part of those are other Europeans. Another is that a lot of other factors affect crime (e.g. wealth, density), so maybe those effects are just swamping the data.
But in East Germany, where there are very few migrants, there is still a ton of crime. It seems to undermine the idea that if crime is what we’re most concerned about, we should be focusing on immigration.
Source? I don’t doubt they’re prosecuting speech, but I can’t find recent stats. Closest I got was data for all hate crimes from 2023, which was 17,007 (note that these are all recorded crimes, not necessarily prosecuted)
9\times365=3285
3285\div17007\approx19.3\%
Could nearly 1/5th of hate crimes based only on speech? It’s possible, but seems high. And the proportion would have to be higher if we’re actually talking about arrests.
The UK has a population of ~68 million, ~57 million in England, and ~10 million in London. About 6.5% are Muslim (6.7% in England, 15% in London). I would be shocked if there weren’t Muslim police officers.
As for London’s Mayor, I can’t find him saying that, though I did find an article about a fake op-ed being spread on social media.
No, he isn’t. He’s a racist who lies to support his racism. He spreads false stories, and interferes in the actual criminal prosecutions he claim to be fighting for.
- We are not faced with a choice between Islam and Russia, we can keep being Western Liberal Democracy.
- Russia is pushing the idea that we have to choose between Islam and Russia because it wants us to choose Russia over Western Liberal Democracy.
- Russia has assassinated people in the UK, Germany, Austria, Turkey, and Ukraine. They’ve also been running misinformation campaigns against the west for decades.
- On the topic of assassination, if you are concerned about German censorship, you should be very, very concerned about Russia.
There was no ink, because there is no agreement that says this. It was explicitly rejected by NATO members, and is now a Russian talking point to justify their invasion of the Ukraine.
Not without a huge misinformation campaign from Russia.
They’re misinformed people who live in cities gutted by the death of manufacturing, and they’ve been manipulated to blame immigrants who had fuck all to do with it.
Extremist Islam is bad, but it isn’t nearly the biggest threat to the West right now. It’s a big threat to Israel, and to the people of lots of majority Muslim countries in the Middle East. But even in the Middle East it often isn’t a majority position, it’s a powerful minority funded by oil wealth whose interests are served by keeping people away from ideas like equality and redistribution.
I think suing newspapers reporting truthfully about a political candidate is a bigger threat to the freedom of speech than fining racists who posting lies online about their Muslim neighbors, yes.
I think major news publications settling suits they would definitely win because they’re afraid of the retribution of the President of the United States is a much larger threat to free speech than Germany making Nazism illegal.
No you didn’t, and you can’t provide a link to prove me wrong.
So is Christianity, but most Christians in the West happily ignore their scripture in favor of freedom for the individual. So do most Muslims in the West.
I had family who lived in Russia for many years. They loved it there. My wife visited them in 2016. They left shortly after because it wasn’t safe any more; a close friend of theirs who didn’t leave was later arrested and imprisoned for over a decade. They did not work in politics or journalism or government, they were elementary school teachers. Through them I have a friend whose parents had to flee because Russia started disappearing journalists. My friend was told, while living in the West, to stop speaking out against what was happening in Russia because it wasn’t safe. They were family friends of Navalny, who was later assassinated by Russia (after failing the first time).
They aren’t my only source about what’s going on in Russia, they left before Russia invaded Ukraine. But their experiences corroborate my other sources, they saw the crackdown begin, they saw the invasion coming.
I also live in DC, so I can corroborate what’s reported about a fair amount of US political news (Pizzagate, January 6th, George Floyd Protests). Trump often lies about life in DC. He lies about how dangerous or dirty it is. Republicans have lied about DC for a long time, because casting DC as embodying Everything That’s Wrong With America supports their small-government platform with their rural base. I know they’re lies, because I live here, but I’ve met enough people who believe them that I know they’re effective.
I don’t deny that brainwashing is happening, it’s happening much more in Russia’s favor; watching the disillusionment happening in Trump circles right now is a grim silver lining to the collapse of the Western alliance.
Who is “they”?
What percent of Social Security spending do you think is going to the wealthy who can do without it?
Link or it didn’t happen.
Look, I realize I’m taking the fall of my government out on you, which is a bit unfair and I apologize.
But also my government is falling because people with no epistemic hygiene or ability to reason, swallowed misinformation and rhetoric whole.
And so when someone who I know to be capable of reason, someone who should know better, comes here to repeat that rhetoric, and refuses to engage more deeply about their beliefs than linking to another TikTok, yeah I get a bit triggered.
You can do better, and you don’t, and there’s too much of that going around. Shame on the lot of you.
Do they? How could we find out?
