While “gaol” was the preferred spelling in Britain and Australia for a significant period, “jail” has become more common, especially in American English. Both spellings are considered correct, but “jail” is the more widely used term today.
Maybe it is because the perpetrators have wealth and privilege and power and are members of “Boys’ club” .
