Ha ha ha ha… I’m going to literally laugh my ass off if it comes down to the Amish vote in the end… they exist in large numbers in two swing states.
Didn’t know Trump doesn’t drink. I don’t know either. Certain Hillary is a lush… has her own special liqour cabinet in the house,.undoubtedly got her through countless scandals, kept her marriage together over the years.
They are both as unlikely to vote (both are Anabaptist by the way, Mennonites communities are descended from Amish, sometimes convert back after moving far away, establishing few communities and bringing in converts).
They have the right to vote, and lack a prohibition against doing so, so sometimes if they get the desire, they go vote. Gotta remember, back in the 19th century, just about everyone was sorta Amish. The PA Dutch wasn’t always Amish in origin, my Catholic German ancestors came from that stock of German immigrants, still have relatives (boringly) out in PA without TV talking gibberish. Most authentic Germans left out there… had no facsism, no WW1 & WW2 depletion of the gene pool, so they aren’t a bunch of green environmentalist, sprouting Nietzsche and Heideggar from the mouth and wondering about alpha vs beta males, sexuality, etc. They just fucking farm and read the Bible, and have way too many children, cause white paint is boring to look at when indoors. Don’t give a shit bout nothing.
No, Amish can serve. Just won’t be allowed back into the Amish community after coming home. Amish are extreme pacifists. Children have a choice to become Amish, or leave the community upon nearing adulthood. Your no longer Amish if you leave, but nor are you considered a evil Satanist. The Mennonites live side by side with the Amish, they know they are very similar, just not as strict on some rules… they have much in common, and provide a culture that Amish youth Amish leaving the Amish community can adapt to with ease. Nothing easy about learning to use computers from scratch, but the mores aren’t that much different.
When Amish travel, they use credit cards instead of cash. I honestly haven’t seen a Amish horse and buggy go by in a while, they used to travel all the time between PA and Ohio through my town here in West Virginia on the side of the road, but just rent passenger vans and have drivers traveling about. I saw them all eating in Sheetz the other day… a gas station chain with a fast food chain built into it… everything has to be ordered via electronic touch screen. I didn’t arrive prior to them, but did see the evidence they used it by the food sitting before them. These were Amish Amish, not Mennonites.
Mennonites often preserve strict dress codes like the Amish, like uniform dress for men… a father and son cane to the KFC U was at, ordered some chicken to go, son dressed exactly like father, including straw hat, work boots, jeans… 6 or 7 years old. Both groups work in construction, not farming as much anymore, so they parallel construction workers as far as travel and eating now.
Out in the Midwest, where you were living, I believe it us still more agricultural based communities, they haven’t gotten into a builder caste yet.
Amish bring in money through tourism, selling cheeses and the fine workmanship if their products. They are increasingly moving away from traditional agriculture. Wont be long till we hear of Amish computer programmers.
