Twin Peaks is SO Good

In this thread we will talk about why Twin Peaks is so good.

To start: Lynches form of storytelling is literally surreal. But that does the surrealist genre entail? How is it put into words?

Are you talking about tits? If so then I agree, they are good. Or, are you talking about a really old tv show? If so, then I dunno man, I don’t think it’s that good.

Obviously I couldn’t say it was good or bad without watching. Now that I have, I can say it’s AMAZING.

It’s an hour of unseen Muholland Drive footage every time I turn it on. Trancendental storytelling. Fucking SO GOOD.

Twin Peaks is great and it’s pure realism.

Pure realism?

Lynch is defined as surreal.

Yeah, I know. I am being polemic. But there is something utterly real he shows us about people.
I recognize the feelings I get watching Lynch films, and perhaps especially Twin Peaks, as undercurrent feelings I get being around people in the real world. It like he builds a world around what is present normally around the edges, like an odor you can almost miss.

Definitely. It’s like it’s surreal because ir’s actually so close to the real.

Except all the women are scorching hot.

See I like shows like cheaters, and blind date, and jerry springer. What is the point of a television show that you have to think about???

Why think about life?

I mean, this is a philosophy board.

I think it’s so good because it makes you feel constantly that terror and beauty are the same thing. It truly stands between two worlds.

Yes, but it does that, and more…

A lot of the time it’s not about the fear, though the score is awesome for that effect - it’s about the fact that there is no level of seriousness. Things that maybe should be extremely depressing are turned into jokes. Things that should be funny are depressing.

Fuck it’s so hard to explain.

You could call it emotionally surreal. But the thing is, that is precisely my experience with a lot of people and events. Often there is a strange disjunction between what people say and what their body language is - so it feels odd to respond because you have to ignore one or the other. And then all the strange tastes - which end up making the design of places, the organization of their businesses and home, and opinions people have or the way they sometimes seem to randomly bring up some topic or give the impression the relationship you have with them is not what you think it is. Is this person flirting or trying to intimidate me?

I find this a lot, both at work and just ‘on the street’. With people I know I feel this much less often and if we are close I just say what seems strange, which is how I like it.

Normal is very weird and I think Lynch can’t help but pick at this like a scab.

Yeah and what other show invites such a depth and complexity of analysis.

Every episode is like a Lynch Movie. The quality-per-minute compared to shows now is utterly mind boggling.

I agree that the amagic is in that kind of contradiction that is constalty happening, also in how the things that are really frightening are also beautiful and bring me some weird deep joy. I never know what it is that happens there beyond that it happens. There is no deeper layer behind it, it is itself the deeper layer behind me, watching it. Or something. Yes, so difficult to explain.

He also doesn’t close everything off and tie it with a ribbon. Mysteries go on after his stuff is over.

I was unimpressed with the series, but did like Mulholland Drive…
