When this question is asked, most people answer it in three different ways. The first person answers - I am the body. I look like the body. I have a name. I have a title. I have a designation. I have an appearance. I am this appearance.
But fortunately, some of us are lucky enough to go beyond this and we realize that we are not the body, but we are the self. We are not simply the body, but we are the body, the mind, the intellect, the ego, and the spirit and the soul. When we start realizing that we are not the body and we are actually the self, the human self, which is the composite collection of all these things put together, then we start praying and building a connection with God, because we realize that we are the power within. This is the stage where we move away from the lower state of being just the body. But we have still not reached the higher state of being the spirit of God itself.
A few are luckier still and move to level three, where we realize we are not the body because the body dies and is consumed and goes back to being a part of the five elements. The mind, the intellect and ego - are subtle parts of the body, which leave the body and therefore, are without an identity. When this inner instrument of the mind, intellect, ego complex realizes the truth that we are the divine spirit, God itself and like the wave merges with the ocean, merges with the creator itself, becoming God as God particles, going back to its source, energy - this is reaching the third level of existence.
Therefore, analyze what you think you are. Are you the body? Are you the self? Or are you the spirit of God that lives within you? What are you?
What happens to the persons who die before reaching level three?
What am I? I’m mind, body and spirit. This is my given trinity; it is not a hierarchy of parts, moving from the body base to the spiritual heights. It is three in one.
Same thing that happens to someone who dies before reaching level two.
But according to hindubuddist lore, if you reach level 3 you go to a better planet than earth, possibly a world with endless honey and cyborg lesbians, but if you are only a level 2 super sayan you have to respawn back on earth, realm of the pasty politicians, broken economy, toxic environments, boring dishonest people you can’t relate to and sexual stratification.
Really? But I’m not interested one way or the other in seeing your pic UP. That is not an insult and mutual reciprocation has to be based on what is “mutually pleasing”.
Aside from that, star stuff has cooled down a bit in the last - what is it - 14 billion years or so?

Yes. It is three in one as it seems to us: body, mind and spirit, but body–mind are just like the shirt you and me wear. They are layers or covers, and they drop off. Essentially, we are the spirit. To your question on what happens to the person who dies before reaching level three: those who don’t realize that they are the spirit continue to be the body–mind. The body dies and is left behind on planet Earth. The mind as referred to as the inner instrument along with the memory, the ego and intellect – four of these are supposed to be reborn, and they continue another journey of birth–death one after the other until they realize the truth that they are the spirit.
If level three is impersonal, why would I want it anyway? I wouldn’t know I had arrived at some point in which my knowing had been erased. I’m looking for a down to Earth, feet on the ground religion that does not negate what I am. I opt for an heaven (afterlife) in which I’m reunited with relatives and friends I’ve known on Earth. These ephemeral, ethereal soul states offer me nothing that oblivion couldn’t offer.
