It is correct that 2 ton, 4 ton vehicles are far more dangerous than any bicycle, and bicycles should not be regulated like they are in your country.

Basic physics suggest the weight, speed and acceleration of a bicycle is not even in the same league as a 2 ton or 4 ton motor vehicle and the regulations should be proportional to that.

Some ebikes weigh under 45 lbs, while some bicycles weigh 45 lbs. The very heaviest ebikes would weigh 80 to 100 lbs.

If a bicycle can be pedalled by foot 21 mph, then any regulation demanding a 15.5mph limit on ebikes is tyranny.

Some ebikes weigh the same as some bicycles.

Then factor in, rider and cargo weight. Some riders weigh 100 lbs while others weigh 400 lbs. A 400 lbs rider on a bicycle, is far more dangerous than a 100 lb rider on a heavy ebike. And the UK better not create fascist anti-fat laws to make society “safer”.

I am very happy to know that there is a speed limit for moronic 16 + boys on electiric vehicles. And that anyone who wants to power through higher speeds would be required to seek insurance and a driving licence. 15.5mph (25km/h) makes sense to me. Pretty much Europe wide. If bicycles had not been invented 150 years ago, I would think they would also attract more restritions too. Luckily if you are dumb enough to go fast on a pushbike then you are hoepfully going to kill yourself and not others.

Hyperbole is calling ebikes “heavier and more dangerous” than bicycles. Hyperbole is ignoring that regular bicycles can be pedalled by foot in excess of 21 mph, far more than the legal limit of ebikes.

Average ebike = 50 lbs. Average walmart bike = 40 lbs. Really not significantly heavier. Especially when riders can vary in weight between 100 and 300 lbs.

I would even say “hyperbole”, is when, random people online have some knee-jerk reaction to stand up for tyranny whenever some hero tries to save them from tyranny. Like in that They Live movie when he asks him to put on the glasses, he refuses to put on the glasses and would rather fight him and make the world worse. The world wants to paint you a picture of Europeans being this type of “transcendant humanity” or a “civilized utopia” where politicians always make the utmost rational decisions to protect everybody’s safety. That Europeans are the pinnacle of human society and evolution.

You can’t seriously believe that a 50 lb ebike is much different than a 40 lb walmart bike, can you? When human weight is the main weight factor. While others weigh 400 lbs… How is a 10lb bike weight difference even mathematically relevant, compared to a 300 lb human weight difference?

A 150 lb rider of an average, 50 lb ebike, at 20 mph, would have 2719.8 Joules. This is basic physics that should be obvious.

So the NFL player riding a natural bicycle, could have about 7.3x the impact energy than a person on an ebike…
