Why is there always a negative trade-off for certain things?

For example living in the city there is the benefit of civilization and convenience but there’s also the downside of crime and violence and overpopulation why can’t I just have the positives without any of the negatives ? Another example is being an adult and doing adult errands why can’t an adult just simply exist and the people around them Grant you those things without you having to go out of your way to do them and renew them regularly ?

Reality occurs via change, change is the emergence and dissolution of limits via limits, anthropomorphically this change is sacrificial in nature.

Reality is one giant act of sacrifice. You cannot control whether or not you sacrifice, just what you sacrifice too.

I think the problem is that the positives and negatives aren’t really separate things. The convenience of civilization exists precisely because there’s a huge system of people, rules, infrastructure, and obligations behind it. You can’t really take the benefits while removing all the costs that make those benefits possible.

Same with adulthood. Being able to simply exist without constantly maintaining documents, paying bills, renewing things, etc. would be nice, but those things are part of what keeps the system functioning. The frustrating part is that we often experience the benefits as automatic while experiencing the maintenance as a personal burden.

One of my Facebook friends posted a you question, and I thought I would share it here so that you would realize (with warm fuzzies) you’re not the only one like you in the universe… but I’m sure that you’re gonna think there’re drawbacks to that one, too:

I agree with Stopgap, and would say that “good” and “bad” are two sides of the same coin. You can’t serve two masters, at least not effectively, so everything is a trade off- if you invest in one thing you will have less time or money for another thing, even with personality traits- someones best traits is usually also their worst one- if someone is persistent that is great in some scenarios but problematic in other.

If you study wide range of topics and sciences you will have wide range of knowledge but you will not master any of them (jack of all trades master of none), if you concentrate on one- you will become master of it eventually- but you will lack the width.

I guess that main solution in any situation is to prioritise- evaluate what you get from something and what you lose- and make decisions based on that- on a personal level, on societal level it is a lot more complicated and complex- but it boils down to same underlying principles, in my opinion.
