Winnipeg, Canada

I’m looking to travel to Winnipeg, Canada this mid October. What should I expect? Is there anything there worth seeing?

Is there any fun to be had there?

There isn’t much in Winnipeg.

How big of a city is it? This October I just wanted to visit Canada a bit to fulfill my desire of always wanting to go there.

( Winnipeg seems to be the closest big destination to the proximity of where I live.)

What about Thunder Bay In Ontario?

Both Winnipeg & Thunder Bay are interesting in terms of their being foundational to the career of Neil Young, but not much otherwise… Avoid mosquito season in either place. Thunder Bay, if you have to choose between the two (you have to experience the Canadian Shield to get there, which is pretty awesome).

Now, that said, the people of Winnipeg are great!!

But Alberta is the heart of the country now (what with our Tar Sands economic prowess and quaintly right-wing pseudo-Americanism). Banff is sweet. Jasper is sweeter.

It’s pretty big. I had my basketball nationals in Winnipeg. It’s a clean city. The people are nice enough, but yeah… not much going on there

Which city should I go to? Winnipeg or Thunder Bay? I just wanted to travel through Canada in order to expirience the place.

If I wanted to expirience Canada profoundly on a vacation which city would best facilitate this?

( Can’t be too far from the Minnesota border. Only got six days of vacation in October.)

Thunder Bay is probably more ‘Canadian’ but Winnipeg would probably have more to do.

Winnipeg it is then.

So what is there to do in Winnipeg?

What are the sites to go see? What is the night life like? What is the city like?

In the next year and a half I plan on doing a vast amount of travelling.

In August I plan on going to St. Paul Minnesota where afterwards I plan on visiting Superior national forest north of there.

In October of course I plan on going up in Canada for half a week.

Finally at the end of next year probally the fall of next year I plan on going to Las Vegas in Nevada and then of course enjoying the special treatments of Reno Nevada.

I’ve always wanted to get out more.

From what I remember there were quite a few casinos. I believe it has a couple pretty nice parks as well. I was there in the dead of winter, and mostly just went from the hotel to the gym, so I didn’t see much.

Interesting note: it’s so dry there that in the winter they don’t have snow plows, but snow blowers–kind of these rotating brush things–because the snow is so light and dusty you don’t really even need anymore more than that. It was cool to watch it in action being mostly from Halifax, where you can get storm that literally block your entire door with heavy you-ain’t-going-nowhere stuff.

I like casinos. We have enough of those here though.

When you say parks, are you talking about city parks or nature parks?

I’ve heard the same about Canadian winters.

I wonder if you go far up north enough into Canada if they have the same twenty four hours of night and day like Alaska does.

( Another place on my list of destinations to go to.)

St. Paul is definitely a cool city, as is Minneapolis, but don’t get lost and end up in the bad parts.

The Superior/Duluth area is amazing. Cool little towns, nice people, asbolutely beautiful scenery.

Bad parts?! We have bad parts?? hehe, well, maybe one or two

Thunder Bay is actually a very beautiful area, and on your way to Duluth, be sure to hit Gooseberry Falls. Actually that entire north shore drive is gorgeous. But then, I’d take a cabin on Lake Superior over oceanfront property any day.

Honestly… both.

Yeah… Stick to the downtown and “uptown”(just south of downtown on Hennipin and Lyndale) areas if you go to minneapolis… DO NOT head north of downtown after dark… St. Paul, cant really go wrong, there are a couple rough spots on the east side of downtown St. Paul. Depending on what you are looking to do will determine what city you want to hang out in… Age is a good determining factor, 30+ and St. Paul is more appealing. Below 30 and Minneapolis is usually a better time… Of course there are always exceptions…

Duluth is great and the saying is that the best part of Superior is the view, its nearly true… Best bet is to stay on the MN side of the lake…

Are you planning on heading over to MN during the State Fair days? That is always a great social experiment with good food.

Yeah. In every city no matter where you travel there is always the ghetto side of town with a pawn shop, liqour store, check n loan, and a convenience store on every corner sometimes right across the street from each other as if it was a virtual sign that reads desperation runs deep here beware.

Then of course there are the churches and demagogues right across the street from all of that in the ghetto. Their signs reads that to all those desperate and suffering we are here to help if we can just get your congregation and weekly offerings to help you on your way to heaven.

( Don’t get me started on the segregated neighborhoods. :stuck_out_tongue: )

That’s what I keep hearing. I haven’t made up my mind between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg.

Great, great film tho’ hardly does much to sell the place!
