It’s to be expected. Anybody can come into a thread and fling shit; it doesn’t bother me anymore.
You’re actually wrong about this Wonderer. People on this site give everything for free. Knowledge & ignorance reside on the same coin: “knowledge/ignorance”. You cannot ever speak with knowledge; you can only speak with ignorance. Listening is the key; an activity that seemingly few people are interested in doing around here. If you truly listen to what other people have to say, then they will teach you everything you could ever want to know. You will realize that words are filtered through processes of innate human ignorance. To say something implies that it is worth saying and at the same time risks losing its inherent message. This is a huge risk taken from my point of view, because almost everybody doesn’t realize the power of words. They’re so damn powerful–it’s amazing…
Speaking is the risk a person takes in exposing their ignorance and never their knowledge. True knowledge is inductive; it is a consequence of listening.
I’m aware of the pecking order. I realized awhile ago that I subconsciously came here to ILP on my first post to use it for personal gain. I have posted very few of my thoughts (purposely) and in exchange, I have been told a great many things which are invaluable to me due to the potential knowledge gain. I have been given a great deal of power by other posters while I have not had to relinquish my own. Other people can do what I have done; it’s fairly easy, but they chose not to. That is something that I haven’t figured out yet. Why would people be willing to give me everything while asking nothing in exchange? The answer revolves around shared ignorance.
That may not be true. If I’m willing to listen to everybody equally, then there is no requirement for getting dirty. It depends on where you want your voice to be heard.
If I want Zeus, Nah, Faust, and others to listen to me and value what I’m saying, then I would post appropriately. However, that is clearly not my endeavor. I have posted for personal gain; I do not need approval from anybody else, as if they are the authorities worth bowing to. They are not my peers any further (since I have accomplished my original goals of learning) until proven otherwise.
If anybody has followed my post over the past several months, then it will be easy to see that my posts were headed in certain directions. Within the last month or two, I became very cryptic in my topics/posts/responses. There were/are specific reasons for this. I can’t speak as clearly as I would like to, because the risk is too great to say what I want to say. I have too much to lose. In time, I will post my thoughts exactly as they should be displayed. It’s only fair to this website, since ILP has given me so much (knowledge through learning).
I’m still pretty amazed by the amount of ignorance/arrogance at ILP, but only in a strict sense. My ignorance/arrogance now matches that of others in many ways. Though, at least I am content and humble that I have spent my life learning and that I now understand how to be knowledgeable/ignorant myself.
Zues I’m with you man. I get to have alot of good philosophy type conversations during the day, then when I come here it’s like, kind of a waste of time to try and get alot of people to reason. I don’t know how this place was when it started, but now it’s just kind of like, comedy really. I can just see the face of the typical confused freshman existentialism student when I close my eyes and think of ILP. I know my posts aren’t usually worth much either, but to be honest, what’s the point? You’ve got about 20 idiots per intelligent person here, and most of them think that if they sling the most shit that they’ve won, or that logic is on thier side,(logic being on someone’s side doesn’t even make sense to me). It’s like alot of people who’ve done a little reading, and now they think they’ve got the key to something big. The truth is, the only way you can really get entertained here is to make fun of the morons and crack jokes with the intelligent ones. Trying to actually do philosophy here is a waste of time.
What kind of person truly has something worth saying?
“The unexamined life is not worth living.” -Socrates
Should I take on the typical ILP poster and answer Zues now?
You guys need to start fucking learning and putting the pieces together–people and their words are only as valuable as they are examined. So fling all the shit you want; you’ll still be stupid as shit until you figure out how to listen. Though, some of you are so ignorant your head repels true knowledge even when it comes at you like a fire hose.
All I see is you people getting knocked out, flat on your asses, and dripping wet… Now shut the fuck up and don’t respond to my posts/topics unless you have something worth typing.
Cheers for Zeus. Don’t know about others, but I’ve thought that for a while as well. Many posts and threads just don’t even attempt to belong on a philosophy board. If the people who make them would actually be interested in the original purpose of this site, well, that still remains to proven. It’s free to start a php forum. Why not discuss how intelligent the select few that have access to it are, and how everybody else is stupid or being used, there? I think somebody did something similar a while ago. They called it MENSA I think. The world is better for it. The rich man does not say he’s rich. The genius doesn’t say he’s a genius. “I just wanted to tell you that I don’t care that you don’t care about what I say”. Just some thoughts.
Maybe you people shouldn’t be hypocrites attacking me personally with ad hominen comments and focus on the material at hand then?
If you don’t want to speak about these philosophically in this thread, then perhaps you need to figue out what it means to “examine” something, like your own lives…
The hypocrisy in everybody’s posts is amazing. I can’t wait for more.
Dude, why do I always have to quote you in your face? Why is it that I remember what you’ve said better than you do? COULD YOU JUST FUCKING REMEMBER WHAT YOU’VE SAID FOR A WHILE?
You’re claiming that we’re stupid because we don’t learn. Well, first of all you’ve just said that you’re deciding not to learn anymore. So by that logic (which you’ve already said you don’t “believe” in, so why am I writing this?), you should be stupid too, or at least not get any smarter.
Secondly, I am listening to you. I’m listening to you, and I’m thinking about what you’re saying, and then I’m summarily rejecting pretty much everything you write because it’s incoherent, illogical, and arrogant. That’s what humans do. They don’t accept mindlessly, they don’t reject mindlessly, they think, and then separate the wheat from the chaff.
That’s why good philosophers justify their conclusions with argument and logic, show how they came to those conclusions, so that someone who wouldn’t agree with the conclusions alone might be persuaded by the validity of the process by which they were reached. You on the other hand, just post your conclusions. And I look at them, and decide that I don’t agree with them. And that’s that. You may be right, but you haven’t posted anything to make me think so. I’ve already come to my conclusions by my own thought processes, if you want anybody to “listen” to and agree with your beliefs, you have to at the very least show how you came to them.
So shut up and lurk, instead of needing everybody’s attention all the time and cluttering the forums with messages you don’t intend anyone to understand. Communication is for purposes of communication, otherwise it is masturbation.
No, you’re losing out, because if you just stated what you believe and why outright, then either somebody would be able to disprove it and you could get on with your life, or nobody would be able to disprove it, and you’d have a bunch of followers. From what I’ve read, you’re way off track, and if you’d just post some concrete stuff, we’d be able to show you that. As a sidenote, it’s genuinely funny that you think that the course of action yielding most selfish benefit would be keeping all your knowledge to yourself. By that logic, if men were truly selfish creatures as you have postulated (in other threads), everybody would be doing that (withholding knowledge). It’s obvious they’re not (this forum exists), and because of this, it’s obvious that one of your beliefs is wrong (either we’re selfish and withholding knowledge isn’t the most selfish course of action, or we’re not selfish and withholding knowledge is the most selfish course of action).
Why be cryptic? Why write in poems? Why put your thoughts into the form in which they are most likely to be misunderstood? You’re the one who is stoking his ego. You’re the one who doesn’t have anything to say, and therefore has to pad his posts with lyricism and superfluous metaphor.
Your post fails these criteria. You have not presented what the quotes mean to you. You have not given a direction for discussion to start in. We are not going to write your thread for you, that’s not how it works.
I listen to everyone. But when I hear somone who thinks that they are comparrable to socrates and then do nothing but quote a couple of well known lines I think that gives anyone the right to speak out against such nonsense
You do sound like self-proclaimed “enlightened” prophet who declared to have solved all personal frustrations.
And how that "valuable"ness measured?
How the “worth”, “degree of stupidity and/or ignorance”, “depth of examination”, “ability to listen” of yours measured ?
These are the notions of your life. Show us how you examined them, a la Socrates, please.
Let’s see if your life is “worth” living according to your own evaluation method.
Or are you going to beg our pardon saying “I’ll explain when I publish my paper”, again ?
