As is known, or not, I am retiring in December…
December 6 to be exact… I have not been subtle or
shy about saying so… I ask virtually every single retire
person who comes into self-checkout, what should I know
about retiring? and I also read every single article I can
find about retirement… and one of things I hear the most
is the need to have/find a sense of purpose, once I retire…
that is why retire people quite often begin to do
volunteer work once they retire… I don’t think I will,
but many people do… this volunteer work helps
them find a sense of purpose in their lives…
Which has gotten me thinking about our own,
non-retirement sense of purpose…
I have already done the raising of my daughter,
she is now 40, so that stage is over…
So, take away work, and for the many young ones here,
take away schooling, and what is your sense of purpose?
do you have a sense of purpose that is outside of our
expected duties, work or school which is a training ground
for work… all an education does is train us for jobs…
nothing more… it has no other value… although it should
be used, schooling, to have a higher purpose which is to
teach us how to be human and what it means to be
human… for 300 years, a university real goal was
to train men to be gentlemen… that was the point of
Oxford or Cambridge… to teach one to be a gentleman…
Which for my money is a far better reason for schooling
than the current use which is, as I mentioned, too be
a jobs training program…
So, think about this… outside of work, or the university,
the work training program, what is your purpose?
do you have some purpose outside of working for the
rest of your life? and if so, what is it? I have study
philosophy for over 40 years… and seriously for
the last 10 or 15 years now… so, what is
our, both collectively and individually, what is our
purpose?
For that is the second brick in the wall, we have a
collective purpose, what is that? As I always ask,
what am I/we supposed to do? That question is tied
into our individual and collective purpose…
What actions give us some purpose in life?
Collectively and individually…
Part of the malaise we suffer from today, comes from this
distinct lack of purpose that we have, either individually or
collectively… Nobody knows what to do…
or why they should act, with purpose, in a collective
way…
For it isn’t enough to say, I am going to be, or I am a
teacher or a farmworker or a grocery checker, we must also,
have some purpose behind being these things… and how
does our individual sense of purpose, fit into our
collective sense of purpose…
let us rethink this idea in terms of another popular viewpoint,
that of tribes… human beings are tribal… we have spent
a million years of pre-history being tribal… and today,
we are, as we have always been tribal…
a tribe can be a family, a work experience, our job…
(work is a very tribal experience) as is sports,
choosing our own team is part of the tribal experience,
Being from Chicago, I love the Cubs, and being a northsider,
don’t like the White Sox… having lived in the Bay Area since
1973, I love virtually all the Bay Area sports teams,
with the SF Giants being my favorite… but that is
part of the tribal experience… Uniting with others to
root on our favorite sports teams… that is the
essence of tribalism…
and the Giants team to hate/rivals is the LA Dodgers…
I disliked them even when I lived in the Midwest…
Tribalism is just another means/ways of expressing
our sense of purpose… for we find purpose within
our tribalism… the US vs THEM mentality that is
so common in our day and age… which is another
way of creating purpose…
an excellent example of this creating purpose lies with
the Liverpool Football club… the anthem of
‘‘You’ll never walk alone’’ is an essential aspect of the
Liverpool club/fan base…
and other example abound in terms of creating a sense
of purpose within our state/society… the idea of
nationality is one such means… a shared collective
bonding over nation is as tribal as any other experience
we can think of…
So, purpose… where do we find it and how does
it impact us?
