Quick, easy google search. The image results are the best, but the other links are pretty telling, especially given how many people (mostly in Southern states) have charges pressed against them for burning that shitty fucking rag.
Why are we suppose to care?
Why do you assume i care whether or not you care?
i don’t. Apathy is probably the best way to go on a petty political issue like this one. i care myself in spite of myself. Flags are all just bullshit symbols of nothing - hollow platitudes and propagandist ideas. Or else totally unrealistic, prideful, pollyanic visions of what society ought be. Just like the stars and stripes and the “American Dream” in all it’s seemingly infinite variations. But i still care, because a culture that glorifies the awful things done by their ancestry simply for the sake of whatever they imagine their “heritage” to be . . . well, that rubs me the wrong way. Not sure why, it just does. So i am gratified by the burning of confederate flags, especially ones being publicly flown (even though that is arson and i in no way condone breaking a federal law
) because it is a symbol i think is threatening, degrading, and hostile to blacks. Especially southern blacks. So if you’re a southern black person, the logical message of a confederate flag being flown by a white person in your state is “If i had my way, if the historical confederacy of which our state was a part had had it’s way, then the black residents of our state (i.e. you) would be slaves or second class residents. That is how it SHOULD have been and how i would want it to be, and so i am flying this flag” - that’s a sentiment that i find repugnant for some reason, even though i am neither black nor southern. One of the things that makes me a liberal i suppose.
But that’s me. You yourself probably have almost zero reason to care.
I notice the Daily Beast article says she was arressted when she wasn’t. Being issued a summons to show up to court for a misdemeanor is not an arrest, not even close. I don’t understand why her reputation around town was, according to the Daily Beast, ruined by her ‘arrest’, which was a cop showing up at her house when everbody was asleep to hand her a piece of paper, and not by her public burning of a flag in a park in broad daylight.
Was she even found guilty of the misdemeanor? The article doesn’t say she was punished in any way. A cop literally handed her a summons to court for starting a fire in a public park. That’s it.
But yeah, “Colorado Cops Arrest Mom for Confederate Flag Arson” is kinda sorta representative of what actually happened. If you squint.
I had a friend who was going on about how no one should be able to tell him not to fly a confederate flag…because this is the united states and in the united states he has a right to free speech and all that.
So I said, “dude, the confederacy was a bunch of people who tried to break up the united states, and rebelled against its government and attempted to destroy the union among the states…so yeah, this is the US and you have that right and all, and as far as I can tell no one is going to make you stop waving that flag, but it’s kind of retarded to appeal to the laws of the the US in order to justify flying the flag of a group of people who were against the united states”.
There was no race angle in what I said for him to latch onto and it just melted his brain.
Of course, the freedom of speech was in the Constitution before the Civil War, so it was their law too, but yeah other than that good point.
This was coming from a guy who wishes he could kill black people who play music too loud in traffic, but he thinks it’s ok to wave the flag of the slavers because of some heritage or something or another. He’s not smart.
I hate with a passion other people’s loud music. I hate other people’s music through a wall even very quiet music. It’s my view that my neighbour ought not to have to hear me, my TV, or any other sound I might make. The invention of such electronic devices has put neighbourly relations in the toilet. Rather than living in peace and quiet; people now live in a state of continual tolerance, and have to quietly put up with the doings of others.
It is no wonder why there is so much random violence and social tension. None of us can ever really escape the presence of others; their ideas, their noise; their bigotry; their lack of consideration; their disgraceful sense of entitlement to do as they please.
This week we saw a complete moron who had taken on to himself the ‘duty’ to provide a very mobile disco to the line of traffic that were trapped on the motorway leading to the Channel Tunnel where the Calais trouble has created a grid-lock blocking traffic for hours. These tragic people were his captive audience, as he danced with his stupid headdress, his speedos and his body painting whilst he played the most boring, loud, repetitive and tasteless row, on a contraption from a pedestrian bridge overlooking the motorway.
WHAT FUCKING TORTURE.
I am a music lover. I love to pay it loud and hot. But when it’s got to be my choice. Hearing a snatch of bass from a car outside is horror. through a wall - even with a piece of music I like is torture to my soul. It demands my attention. And like the pink bear in your head that you are now asked to forget, I cannot shake it.
My studio is in a soundproofed garage where i can play music without pissing people off. It cost me money to do that - I did it to play my drumkit originally, now its used for my art studio.
I understand that such precautions are expensive. BUY A FUCKING SET OF HEADPHONES!!! you can get them for £1. or $1.50 for the hard of thinking.
I’d never impose my noise on another. Why are people so ignorant to do that to me?
As for national flags - I’d burn the fucking lot of them - without exception. Such a flag is a sign saying “bigot here”. Its us, not you, us not them, us and the rest of the world can go and fuck themselves. Flags serve no purpose but discrimination and hatred.
