Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Abbas has been hanging on to power illegally since 2009 when elections were supposed to be held.
When we removed Saddam Hussein it created a power vacuum filled by ISIS. What power vacuum would Abbas leave and who would fill it? Hamas/Iran. The enemy of your enemy is your friend.
New leadership is overdue in the area. Israel and the Palestine Authority both need to hold immediate elections. But is there a credible path to peace after 75 years of apartheid? The US policy has been to look the other way for geo- political strategic reasons. What are the alternatives?

So, you have a population of millions herded into one half of Gaza, living in tents, starving, desperate to feed their families, mourning for 33,000 relatives, and young men are angry at what they have put through. Their doctors and nurses have been decimated. Snipers have picked off their journalists. Children and old people have been randomly killed for just being in the wrong place. And you are saying that this flayed population has to avoid the Hamas fighters, although their primary concern is to survive.
Israel started the largest recruitment campaign for Hamas when it started indiscriminately killing people and used the anger of the young men as a reason for continuing to kill people. What about human psychology do you not understand?
