I'm really starting to doubt if empathy by itself is a good way to guide morals and settle disputes

For example if there is a situation where X demands or desires action or inaction or liability from Y and if the justification X uses for their demands is that “what if you were in my situation , you would want or do this too” but can’t Y also flip the question and ask “what about if you were in MY situation , would YOU want this ?” and at that point if one party fails to empathise with another then everything falls apart but if they do empathise with each other then there’s still the question of which interests and goals to prioritise and where to make compromises that aren’t one sided or if that even is possible.

Also I highly doubt everyone can empathise with everyone in every situation. For example some people’s situation or wants or needs might be more immediate than others. Take for example what’s happening In El Salvador where due process has been curtailed because of their situation of high rampant homicide and cartels , innocent people were often murdered in steets , in such a case how can one demand them to follow due process ? Even if they could empathise with the arguments in favour of due process , the stakes that they have are much more immediate so I highly doubt they’d care

Empathy does not automatically produce sympathy. It may produce antipathy.

I think we need to deport the president and everyone authorizing these ICE operations …even in court rooms …interrupting due process… see how they like it.

Similar to “don’t knock it until you try it” except “don’t authorize it until you try it”.

Maybe if they had sent Hitler through the gas chambers it would’ve avoided the entire Holocaust? Just saying.

i am extremely new to politics and frankly politics itself is a very um interesting concept for me but that’s irrelevant. however I do want to say, why is it that every other law that is broken requires a consequence except for deportation for this specific argument. I underestand that the countries in which these people come from suffer often, but is this not completely unfair for the people who work hard and fairly enter this country? my parents left Korea at a time of turmoil and suffering, my grandpa suffered extreme poverty and yet they still came to America legally at a time where immigration was extremely difficult due to the literal cold war suspicions going around. racial profiling is also bad and I understand that but the thing is 1. ICE officers cannot deport people through racial profiling and 2. no system is perfect as humans are inherently far far far from perfect; the government is extremely flawed no matter who is in charge and I could talk about human imperfection on this subject for hours but I wont because hopefully this gets my point across. of course we can improve the immigration system but we can do this with literally every system ever created. it harms people but so does jail? I guess laws matter everywhere except for deportation. again take this take lightly; I do not care too much for politics if I’m being honest

also on this I completely agree this is an amazing argument and i feel like this brings up the age old question of what morality should be based on. and I feel like this directly coorrelatews with religion, what do u think

No such thing as illegal immigration?

@carolyn

Religion is good, but there must exist a political and philosophical morality within society as well.

@carolyn

A lot of nations enforce deportations, a better question might be, why can’t the United States enforce deportations like all other nations?

Should illegal immigrants benefit over legal immigrants? The obvious answer is no.

No worries, take your time getting use to the format of the forum.

human rights are regardless of citizenship… all people should be treated fairly and have the same rules

@Ichthus77

Treated fairly? Yes, absolutely.

Same rules as legal citizens? No.

If you come here illegally the government has the right to deport you. It would be the same if an American immigrated illegally to another nation abroad.

This is happening all over the world. They ship people in to pay them cheaply and basically they get stuck there and mistreated or they get deported sometimes to where they didn’t even originally come from.

There ought to be a way to remedy that and hold people accountable.

I agree, stop incentivizing them to come over to be exploited and enforce immigration laws.
