After someone bringing up the left brain/right brain hemispheres in here, I decided to look for and take a test.

The results of my test were a 54 on a slide rule of 0 to 100…54 obviously leaning toward the right brain hemisphere.

Since there were a few question which might have gone either way, after some thought, I opted for the most like myself.

I don’t quite agree that both hemispheres HAVE reached a level of perfect harmony though I do strive for that if that is even possible. My opinion is that one must lead and the other follow…at times. :evilfun:

Exactly, that’s why I said I opted for the most like myself. Most of these tests are not geared toward the reality of the human’s contradictions in mind. I wonder how many of them are more in line with astrology than with psychology.

I stopped taking the test when it asked me how I put my laundry into my dresser; because I just throw the damn stuff on my bed; the part of it I don’t sleep on; don’t fold it and don’t do anything with it until I need to change clothes, lol. They didn’t have an option anywhere close to that.

I had a hard time answering some of the questions as well, but I soldiered on and got the exact same results as you, Arc. 54.

Being that the explanation is so identical, I question its science and validity. That’s not to say that it has none. Do you find that you are as described?
I might at some point go back and re-take the test - at that time re-thinking my answers…in other words, giving fresh ones as of that moment. I wonder what will develop.

The test asks far to few questions, and makes presumptions… I use a laundry basket for clean and dirty, dont fuck with dressers. I visualize what I want to wear inverse what the day is… hot, cold, rainy, day off, work, etc, going out to study, going to hike, etc. That is a motley mix of both hemispheres.

And though facial recognition is right, the esteem is left. Such as the rejection of rejection of ugliness in terms of intensity and magnitude, ir Cezar’s irrational addiction to Nietzsche, Unibombers hatred of Technology, young womens frenzy of the beatles… your basic idolatry. Its a bounce back between both hemispheres, but there isnt a single connection between the two.

A concept, such as Plotinus beauty, is multilateral. It can be stretched to apply to simplicity, such as mathematical beauty, or chaos and conplexity, as in the sun glimmering behind clouds, over a complex mountain-ocean visual complex the left hemisphere has the map out and tie together the majesty of the various aspects most poetically… as in verbal. Painting is lateralization in the other direction. Questioning and Answering can be too. What-Where questioning for example is both, taken from a visual stimuli, and processed verbally.

Hence this test is misleading.

I have to say, despite the obfuscation, I agree with Contra.

No obfuscation… I just dont know how to make a simpler explanation minus graphs and videos. I’ve tried it many times in the past, and nobody looks at them.
I have like, nearly 15 years provable experience dealing with a very wide range of psychological tests, read up on how to make them, and regularly dispute them. I cant legally be tested by a multiple choice test for my mental condition at this point as I have a underlining understanding of most psychological tests. Thats what The Troll Emperor of Doom was doing all those years, trolling the fuck out of typology sites. I got bored as fuck once no one was around who could speak the language I acquired.

Now, I cover it up like a pornography addiction or something embarrassing of that sorts. Chicks dont dig that sort of thing.

Satyr went rooting around my past once and started digging some of it up. He was both shocked and excited. He said I was the first real thinker of that type he encountered… which was a bummer, I was hoping he knew of someone else so I could get their email address.

Understanding the Myth of Left Brain and Right Brain Dominance

Have you ever heard people say that they tend to be more of a right-brain or left-brain thinker? From books to television programs, you’ve probably heard the phrase mentioned numerous times or perhaps you’ve even taken an online test to determine which type best describes you. Given the popularity of the idea of “right brained” and “left brained” thinkers, it might surprise you learn learn that this idea is little more than a myth.

According to the theory of left-brain or right-brain dominance, each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. Additionally, people are said to prefer one type of thinking over the other. For example, a person who is “left-brained” is often said to be more logical, analytical, and objective, while a person who is “right-brained” is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful, and subjective.

In psychology, the theory is based on what is known as the lateralization of brain function. So does one side of the brain really control specific functions? Are people either left-brained or right-brained? Like many popular psychology myths, this one grew out of observations about the human brain that were then dramatically distorted and exaggerated.

The right brain-left brain theory originated in the work of Roger W. Sperry, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1981. While studying the effects of epilepsy, Sperry discovered that cutting the corpus collosum (the structure that connects the two hemispheres of the brain) could reduce or eliminate seizures.

However, these patients also experienced other symptoms after the communication pathway between the two sides of the brain was cut. For example, many split-brain patients found themselves unable to name objects that were processed by the right side of the brain, but were able to name objects that were processed by the left-side of the brain. Based on this information, Sperry suggested that language was controlled by the left-side of the brain.

Later research has shown that the brain is not nearly as dichotomous as once thought. For example, recent research has shown that abilities in subjects such as math are actually strongest when both halves of the brain work together. Today, neuroscientists know that the two sides of the brain work together to perform a wide variety of tasks and that the two hemispheres communicate through the corpus collosum.

“No matter how lateralized the brain can get, though, the two sides still work together,” science writer Carl Zimmer explained in an article for Discover magazine. “The pop psychology notion of a left brain and a right brain doesn’t capture their intimate working relationship. The left hemisphere specializes in picking out the sounds that form words and working out the syntax of the words, for example, but it does not have a monopoly on language processing. The right hemisphere is actually more sensitive to the emotional features of language, tuning in to the slow rhythms of speech that carry intonation and stress.”

In one study by researchers at the University of Utah, more 1,000 participants had their brains analyzed in order to determine if they preferred using one side over the other. The study revealed that while activity was sometimes higher in certain important regions, both sides of the brain were essentially equal in their activity on average.

It’s absolutely true that some brain functions occur in one or the other side of the brain. Language tends to be on the left, attention more on the right. But people don’t tend to have a stronger left- or right-sided brain network. It seems to be determined more connection by connection," explained the study’s lead author Dr. Jeff Anderson.

While the idea of right brain / left brain thinkers has been debunked, its popularity persists. So what exactly did this theory suggest?

The Right Brain
According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities that are popularly associated with the right side of the brain include:

•Music
•Reading emotions
•Color
•Images
•Intuition
•Creativity

The Left Brain
The left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language and analytical thinking. The left-brain is often described as being better at:

•Language
•Logic
•Critical thinking
•Numbers
•Reasoning

So Why Do People Still Talk About Right-Brain, Left-Brain Theory?
Researchers have demonstrated that right-brain/left-brain theory is a myth, yet its popularity persists. Why? Unfortunately many people are likely unaware that the theory is outdated. Today, students might continue to learn about the theory as a point of historical interest - to understand how our ideas about how the brain works have evolved and changed over time as researchers have learned more about how the brain operates.

While over-generalized and overstated by popular psychology and self-help texts, understanding your strengths and weaknesses in certain areas can help you develop better ways to learn and study. For example, students who have a difficult time following verbal instructions (often cited as a right-brain characteristic) might benefit from writing down directions and developing better organizational skills. The important thing to remember if you take one of the many left brain/right brain quizzes that you will likely encounter online is that they are entirely for fun and you shouldn’t place much stock in your results.

Kriswest, its a myth that the hand your naturally dominant in means your dominant in the opposite hemisphere. Many people, including myself, use two hands… I use my right now more for writing just out of habit, but my left stays very active as well. But in my youth, it was more balanced.

I’ve thought of a simple analogy… imagine your mind is a single shoe (not a pair), you gave a left side, and a right side of a shoes, and it is laced right down the middle. Your lace connects the two sides, but connects at a variety of unique points. The connections between the two hemispheres are similar, in terms of feedback loops. They go through unique, yet limited points… your heavy duty nerves.

When someone says they are left or right, my first thought is, qhat loop does the lace sbake through?

Though grey matter connections can be many, our cranial nerve link up points are few, and there are a limited number of brain regions each nerve passes through.

I can read a text, and say to myself “you are this nerve at that location, but in response to what, and going where”?

People are more conscious when they tend to express consistently a subsection of this route, unconscious when they allude to link up points muddled, or reject certain directions of thought without knowing why.

Certain classical methods, such as Verbal to Visual teaching, emphasize a cross hemispheric pattern to learning. Its a great help to some, but not to others, who require a different learning pattern.

Its why Im influenced and have ties to the Montessori. They take a more tactile approach to learning over either visual or verbal, and adjust to the students attention span and uses teaching aids as needed, per student.

A concept such as Algerbra developed on using older mathematical systems in certain parts of the mind. My cgallenge gas been rewriting the ideas, founding them in other psychological roots, for students who cant traditionally learn such concepts to work them first unconsciously, and build up there until they can explore such feedback loops consciously.

Its important, because though West Virginia beats Mississippi in school testings Kriswest, we are still at the bottom… many people couldnt learn in school, but learn later in life when they can find tutors. This suggests its more institutional and cultural reasons rooted in our economics. So, I try to find more natural ways to approach mathematics, from the highest to the lowest.

Not all fields, such as Pure Mathematics, can involve every part of the brain and consciousness. You can only do so much with language… if you have a lesion, there is no work around ontologically/neurologically. You may not loose full capacity to “know” language, but a aspect of processing information may elude, be it in receiving or sending.

Though anyone can be a artist, certain kinds of art would be shut off. If you had a lesion preventing straight lines from being drawn, for example, your likely not to get into freestyle painting, for though a ruler can help in certain aspects, if your hurting there, your unlikely to be able to tackle consistently other tasks.

And a person is of course able to expand, and even diminish, their psychological orientation over time.

I hope this cleared up any “obfuscation” on anyone else’s end.

Oh, Kriswest, do me a favor, just have your husband do the test as himself, then as he sees you, and post both results. I think I know the problem here.

:slight_smile: Contra, my dear husband would not take the test even should I ask him. He hates tests, all tests. He drives safely so that he does not get tickets which would force him to take a driving test…

First question on that test has these answers.

I list them in order of importance and work on each, one by one, until completion. I organize them in order of importance and switch between projects when I get bored. I jump from one project to another until they get done - eventually.

Ok not what I would do.
I would get the worst one done first then go from there.

The rest of the questions are that way to me. I would have to compromise on the answers too much or flat guess.

You do have a good idea though about the one closest to us answering the test for us. Several people doing it for a person might be better. You would have to factor in the relationship. We are different around different relations.
