Little factoid about the christian cross

symbolic

Check out the name “Yehohanan”. We don’t know much about the practice of crucifixion and for all the claims about the precise records kept by the Romans, the fact is that not even Constantine knew a proper cross.
I think that "crucifixion was a term that applied to several styles of torture. Crucifying 6,000 men in one victory probabili required some improvisation. Nevertheless the thought was clear on what they wanted to do which was to have someone in an uncomfortable position making choices that caused pain. Nails in the heels may have been the only consistent practice but again, if they were low on nails, they probably improvised.
Hands were probably not as common but could be done. Nails through the palms were probably assisted with ropes on the wrist.

Good summary and one that most Christians and non Christians would agree with.

I’ll agree with that. Which means all the pictures and renditions of Christ were wrong, you would think one of 2 billion people would be guided by the holy spirit =)

I think History channel lost some credibility when they started showing ancient aliens. Just sayin.

Jesus asked for the god to forgive the people and willingly sacrificed his life for the people. There would have been no struggle to free himself if he fully believed in this action.

History lost credibility back when it used to show 24 hours of Hitler back in the 90’s when it first came out. But not every show is absurd.

Most of the specialty channels have marathons when they put out only one show. So what.

No you either don’t understand or don’t remember… I used to call the History channel the “Hitler Channel”, because it showed nothing but Hitler for it’s first 3 years or so on the air. Now all of that has moved to the war channel, and even on that channel there’s more diversity.

Back to the thread…

I’m not a physics guy but it seems to me that the breadth of the nail head would make a big influence in whether or not nails through the hands could support a body. I’ve heard too that some crosses had a wooden seat of sorts that helped support the body weight as seen in this picture;

frugalsites.net/jesus/crucifixion.htm

I already addressed that point… there are no BONES in the hand strong enough to support a nail no matter how wide it was or how wide the nail head was, because the hand can tear through the actual nail. The only way this is possible is if you used VERY thick rope and tied it VERY taut against the WRIST. Which no Christian representation shows. Which means 2 billion people weren’t inspired by the holy spirit.

It is symbolic. Symbolism is pointing to meaning; not facts. You are wrong if you think symbolism is about facts.

Well… Kriswest just came in here and said Christ meant to die for our sins, yet we know he debated his case with Pontius Pilate. So if he really wanted to get out of the crosses in those depictions… he could have. That’s 2 billion people not moved by the holy spirit. What symbolism means IRRATIONALITY!!! That’s taking it a bit far.

Do you struggle with driving in the city? A lot of street signs do not accurately represent what is intended. Green for go and red for stop must have been a major stuff up for the bilions of people on the planet. It is all about communicating meaning.

I’ve walked my whole life (though with a drivers permit I can drive people anywhere), but we’re not talking about ordinary street signs here, we’re talking about Gods holy spirit coming into people. That’s 2 billion people who have never received it.

Besides whether Jesus was crucified with nails only or ropes and nails, what else is the holy spirit supposed to tell Christians?

Ec, you are using incorrect reasoning.

You are using a toothbrush for hunting and then criticizing dentists for making poor hunting tools… You fail to understand the function and meaning of the toothbrush.

That would be as if the Holy Spirit was pointing to the sun but the writers wrote instead about the finger. What was important about the inspired narrative was not HOW he did but WHY he died.

As far as I know the word for the thing used in the crucifixion means ‘tree’ or ‘stake’ as much as it means ‘cross’ and the Staurogram was the earliest symbol of the crucifixion, which isnt helpful at all. I’m not sure what great religious significance this debate is suppose to have.
