Rediculous

Okay, so being on the web has shown me that millions of otherwise literate people do not know how to use “its” or “you’re” properly (sure, there are many other examples; feel free to add your own below–I’m calling “affect” and “effect”…). But when did “rediculous” become such a common mistake? Is it a trend I’ve missed or what? Any ellumination would be appreciated.*

*Yes, I’m aware of the spelling a few words over…

Oh come on, that’s simple.

Rediculous is when something is ridiculous twice over, hence the “re.”

You didn’t know that? You are rediculous.

Ok… I was hoping no one would address this issue… because I have a confession to make.

With all my weed talk I have to admit… if I get high enough, normal words start to look weird if I think about them too long… usually I don’t even think about spelling… but every once and a while I’ll just stare at a word l and be like ‘is it an …‘e’ or an… ‘i’’ :astonished:

do you want an illumination ? or a light enema ?

This happens to me when I’m sober. It’s because the symbols used are usually arbitrary, there’s no necessary reason why we spell words the way we happen to spell them.

Or so I think.

I agree… who cares if it’s spelt wrong so long as the point gets across… and usually a simple typo doesn’t affect the point all too much… if at all.

Tab4CorrectSpelling

All we have here is words - treat them with respect: they are the tools of the trade and the weapons of war.

AND CAPITALIZE YOUR GODAMNED MOTHER-INTERCOURSING 'i's

[i must now go and take my nerve-pills]

Psyche, you have touched on my deepest net based pet peeve.

It’s spelled ‘loser’, for fuck sakes, not ‘looser’! Looser is the oposite of tighter, god damnit!
LOSER - ONE WHO LOSES
LOOSER - LESS TIGHT.
GOT IT?!?!?!
ARRRRG.

Ok, I’m better now.
But that really bugs me

I see people make this mistake literally ALL THE TIME and I am losing all faith in humanity. (Not that I ever had any, but I like the expression)

People who say

definately

instead of

definitely

should be shot.

ben

i guess it’s time to affirm some enemys here, im pro poor spelling.

Everytime i see someone comment about someone else’s spelling the psuedo intellectual flag pops up, i can’t help but wonder why they need to see correct spelling when i have no problem understanding what these people write, not to mention how healthy for the brain it is to figure things out, instead of securing the nuron network in ones head with pre learned knowledge, the brain needs to stay healthy by increasing the network, im a firm believer that increasing it through knowledge decreases the ability to be creative, as things tend to be balanced, and the more you use an ability the better you become at it. So if you simply learn knowledge you lose some ability to create knowledge as you exercized the memory part of the brain instead of the creative part.

It comes down to this, i enjoy people who let loose on words, it gives personality and lets me exercize my brain by not only understanding what they’re saying but also allowing me to understand how they say things, its a healthier read in my opinion.

You have to test your mental ability to increase it, you can;t baby it and expect it to grow. Think of wanting to increase your mass, you could simply feed yourself a bunch of food, but you would grow with usless weight because you wouldn’t be able to use any of it, all you could do is throw it around, you have to feed yourself and exercize yourself, there’s simply no point in doing one with out the other. even einstein believed this, infact its pretty common knowledge in my opinion that you need to be creative as well as knowledgable to be intelligent. Thus reading poor spelling is healthier then reading proper spelling, as you have to use your creative mind to figure out whats trying to be said. its basically doing a bunch of small equations.

Knowing enough english to get by is fine by me, god knows i would know far less then i do if i hadn’t had so many people chew me out for spelling things wrong.

i forget to type some words, tend to use words that rhyme with the word i mean to type and of course mispell a lot fo things.

my theory on all this is, if they can understand me they’re the people i want reading it, if they can’t they can;t be very intelligent so i don’t really care.

(had to edit one thing, i mispelt einstein oops )

absolutely

That’s Imp for you, if there’s any shooting to be done - he’s all for it.

Kiluad,

Without clear and understandable communication, we have nothing.

Generally people that can’t be bothered to use grammar do so because they are
a: Lazy
or
b:Stupid.

There is the rare instance of the uneducated intellectual, but usually piss poor grammar is a good indicator that the person in question isn’t worth talking to.
I mean, why should I put out the effort to try to communicate with someone that is only going to give a half assed response?

For someone who believe morality is bunk he does have an awful lot of justice to hand out.

justice only comes to it’s own when you get rid of pesky morals in the way.

Zeno - I’m sending you a replacement shift-key in the post.

SIATD - “For someone who believe morality is bunk” that’s believes - shame on you, and in a sucky-spelling thread too…

because it helps keep your brain stay healthy, you get insight into the minds of the so called lazy/stupid persons way of thinking, these people do have as much say in the direction of your world/country as you do after all.

I’ll agree that it’s rare to find an uneducated intellectual, however, it’s also rare to find an intelligent educated person, not as rare, though they arn’t exactly sparce.

The most important reason is people don’t have to know what they;re talking about to teach you something, you never know what you’re going to pick up from someone.

“A lot” is two words, not one.

no, “a lot” is more than two… two is a couple or a pair…
