Living inside the United States I feel like racial and ethnic conflict has brought about our multicultural society on the verge of collapse. I feel like there’s only one last chance to save our multicultural society but it requires realistic solutions not the wishful fanciful naivety that neoliberals offer in response. We either save our multiracial and multicultural societies with realistic solutions or watch everything descend into violent ethnic racial conflict overtime. This is not just a problem inside the United States but also much of the western world as well.
Been meaning to create this thread subject for awhile now.
The left tends to over-emphasize ‘celebrating differences’ as the path to multiculturalism, and while I agree that we should strive to create a society where that’s possible, it’s disastrous in combination with the high levels of inequality in the modern US. Highlighting differences when people have real grievances about social unfairness leads to people associating their grievances with the differences.
Instead, we should highlight ways in which we are the same, and give people some common national experience around which they can relate to each other. The most effective way we’ve seen to do that is probably war, and specifically a war in which a significant percentage of young people are forced to participate and go through the grinder together. It’s no coincidence that the civil rights era followed several decades in which the US was at war, from WWII to Korea to Vietnam, in which young men were drafted and forced to fight, but also partnered with people from different places and cultures. It was a unifying experience.
I’m not sure that war is a necessary part of that, though. What’s important is getting young people out of their hometowns and into common, somewhat unpleasant work with people from all over could have a similar effect.
I’ve been toying with the idea of universal draft to staff the police force for other reasons, but I think it could work here. Draft young people, put them through an intensive boot-camp, and then send them around the country to replace all-volunteer police forces. Make it truly universal and as randomized as possible.
I’m not sure that qualifies as “realistic”, but it could be effective.
What do you think about banks giving out race based loans to African Americans and Latinos as a way to sure up economic inequality all the while excluding white people.
There was also a thing that came out of the Biden administration that would hand out extra financial loans from the federal government to people of color starting their first family farms in rural areas while also excluding white people there as well. In both instances the exclusion of white people was called racially based economic redistribution.
In both of these instances, is this not racial and ethnic discrimination?
I think we need a system where everybody has their own independent ethnic and racial neighborhoods kinda like what we have for native Americans on reservations. With natives on reservations it is considered their own cultural turf to do whatever they want with the areas where nobody else is allowed to buy up, rent, or lease there. Likewise I imagine we could do the same all across the United States having Little Mexico, Little Italy, Chinatown, Germantown, Harlem, and so on that would reduce racial ethnic tensions nationwide. My current ideal is where everybody acknowledges we’re different and separate from each other but also equal under law of the state. I think that might be one possible direction to go towards fixing things. There would also be multicultural cosmopolitan areas of the nation for those who want to intermingle and not be confined separately. In this way everybody gets what they want.
Yes, I think so. But I’m skeptical that this happens. For a government program, it would be illegal to explicitly discriminate on the basis of race, so when they talk about doing it (e.g. I think this is the Biden program you mentioned), they do it by expanding access to the loans through banks in black-majority neighborhoods, or partnering with schools and community leaders to spread information about the programs.
I don’t think private banks are allowed to explicitly discriminate by race either, and the incentives don’t make sense without the threat of government force – which could come in the form of increased audits when the demographics of loan recipients don’t match the demographics of the population in the vicinity of a bank.
As that SBA article notes, lending to black-owned businesses is far below the black share of the population, and that was with programs that seek to boost lending to black people. So either way, it’s not likely that many banks are denying white borrowers in order to give to black people. Credit isn’t that tight.
But I can believe that a white person who would have been denied anyway would attribute the denial to wokism when their black neighbor is approved for the same type of loan.
I have a lot of objections to this:
Indian Reservations are terrible and unjust;
Separate-but-equal never works;
Most people don’t identify strongly enough with their ancestor’s culture to actually want to do this;
Most American families are culturally mixed;
Which cultures get their own space? Who chooses which space each culture gets? Historical mechanisms are ugly;
How do you see society sorting itself? Again, historical mechanisms are very ugly;
How does this “save multiculturalism”? It seems to do the opposite.
I would not describe this as a realistic solution to save multiracial or multicultural societies.
I believe there is some conspiracy. Whenever a black tries to reform the black community and make it not a retarded cesspool, they get gunned down. Then violent rap music is promoted and it becomes a retarded cesspool again. This is so blacks can invade and overpopulate white spaces and become a problem for white people. Then whites are distracted and busy with conflicts. In fact they want all of the news and media to be perpetually be about some kind conflict.
White society has totally deteriorated and become nothing but ugly capitalism and stroads.
I will address more of your points later, but I did want to say some things very quickly on this idea of mine.
First, the cultural ethnic and racial neighborhoods would be voluntary or optional. Nobody would be forced into them against their will.
I also said there would be lots of cosmopolitan neighborhoods as well in between them where there would be no racial or ethnic restrictions that anybody of any race and ethnicity can reside in.
Secondly, there would still be free passage of travel or commerce for everybody in these designated ethnic cultural neighborhoods. As a white European man I could go to Chinatown traveling, eat at a restaurant there, and even go shopping in their store districts. But since I am not ethnically Chinese I won’t be able to own property, rent, lease, or work in the area as it would be considered a designated cultural heritage neighborhood.
There would be different ethnic cultural heritage neighborhoods all over the nation like this. Some are Chinese, Some are French, some are Mexican, some are African American, and so on. With a little bit of effort the goal would be to try to represent everybody within the nation.
Not all native American reservations are terrible, I have visited many over the years. But you are right to say, some are much better than others.
What I envision is rebuilding ethnic and racial communities everywhere with new infrastructure, manufacturing, job opportunities, or even commerce. It would be all different ethnic and racial communities, African Americans included.
The goal would be to have all different races and ethnicities thriving equally to lessen conflict between them. I believe economic prosperity for all is the means to do that along with a healthy mutual respect of everyone.
For me it is either this way or prolonged racial and ethnic conflict which with this idea of mine I hope can be avoided. Racial and ethnic conflict is consuming a majority of western nations now where I think we need to come up with new solutions to make things work because clearly the current political status quo isn’t working.
Also, because of the immense consequences of global immigration and migration into western nations I would put a giant pause on all of it for at least three hundred years. Should be a substantial amount of time for the damage that has occured to become undone overtime.
