Turnips By Ordeal

Turnip fries are supposed to be a healthy alternative to regular french fries. This may not be completely true.

Last night, I had in my possession a turnip that was close to the size of a football. Half of a football at least. I made turnip fries. I was expecting some people, but nobody came, so I pretty much ate the entire bowl of turnip fries myself.

I woke up feeling like death itself—stomach ache, headache, tired. Literally poisoned. The previous night, I ate or drank nothing but water and turnip fries. So, I did some research about turnips…

Turnips taste bitter, which is probably an evolutionary response to the cyanoglucosides that they contain—which release small amounts of cyanide. Cyanide is poison. Turnips also contain the toxin psoralens, which is said to be photocarcinogenic—another poison.

I was poisoned by a turnip.

Mark my words, things are not always what they seem…

Now how did this turnip come into your possession? Did you procure it for that purpose, or was it one of those impulse buys, like when I wanted to see what tasted like? (For what it’s worth, it tastes like cucumber, but with less flavor and a texture similar to firm Jello.) How were the fries, aside from the apparently nightmarish gastrointestinal aftermath?

I don’t Think there’s very much cyanide in turnips, though some people are supposed to be sensitive to them. I am a Little skeptical they are much healthier has fries than potatoes. I mean, we’ve still got the overheated oils and a basically a fat/carb meal. Turnip carbs may be a bit more complex than potato carbs, making it better for blood sugar. A footbal mass of carbs with a significant portion of oil in it would make me very messed up.

Don’t try rutabega fries, in any case.

Sweet potato would be healthier and should not cause cyanide issues.
Though I find, for some reason, females like sweet potatoes more than males.

You know, wild potatoes are poisonous too, come to think of it.

Good to see you back, TAFKAMIAC. Whatever that fruit thing is, it looks like an alien life form.

There was no oil Moreno. Just the baked turnip slices.

Anyways, I don’t think I’ll ever eat a turnip again. I’m still feeling the effects from last night. Lingering stomach ache, and a bit of a headache. Too many carbs would make me feel sluggish. I think there’s actually small amounts of poison in a turnip—mainly because I honestly felt close to death this morning.

Apparently turnips are not the only poisonous “healthy” food. There was also an article on the Huffington Post about the 5 most dangerous vegetables. Turnips were number 4, but mainly because they are hard to chop and the danger was in accidentally cutting your fingers.

There could be other explanations.

Maybe you ate too many.

Maybe you undercooked them; you didn’t eliminate all the toxins.

Maybe you used cheap oil.

Did you eat a lot of ketchup or any other crappy condiments with them?

Also, whenever you eat a lot of one thing, that’s never a good thing, try eating half as much with a nice homecooked burger, maybe you’ll have better results.

Also, potatos are an extremely nutritious food. They got a bad rap because they’re high in cards, but you can practically live off potatoes and milk alone.

That’s been my life on a daily basis for the last two years Von, as they’ve not only been messing with processed foods but they are also now adding (natural) preservatives to fresh produce to prolong shelf life regardless if it is an allergen to a large percent of the population… which I found out that this (natural) preservative is.

lol So how do you explain all of the other people who eat turnips and are not poisoned by them? Perhaps you ought not to have taken so much water with them. They are very gassy. Try their kissing cousin next time, the sweet pototoe - which is really much better and healthier for you.

Potatoes are part of the Nightshade family. The tuber is fine, the eyes and the plant are toxic.
Turnips like some other foods are notorious for causing some people digestive issues. For me, its raw cucumbers.

That is true.

That is also true.

The only thing i want to add here that one may live purely on the milk.

…even if one is lactose intolerant? :confusion-shrug:

I hear the intolerance is because of tampering with the milk, but I daren’t test that theory out or the toilet bowl will suffer 8-[

Magsj,

If you can get raw milk directly, i can bet that it would not harm any human in the world, but cannnot say the same about processed one.

All you have to do with raw milk is to boil it once, allow it to cool down at room temprature and put it in the fridge. And, that would be safe for many days.

And, i am talking about the pure and simple milk only, not its derivatives like cheese.

I eat turnips all the time, they are delicious. Though what you are describing sounds more like a swede/rutabaga. Or maybe you are Irish? Anyway, great stuff. I’m guessing you just didn’t cook it well. That’s on you man. Learn to cook.

At that point it isn’t raw milk anymore, so what’s the point? Pasteurization does the same thing while affecting the taste a lot less. Now, the raw milks I’ve had have been fantastic but that’s because I knew the farmer and it was good grass-fed shit. But that milk would still be good shit if pasteurized. It’s factory farming coupled with the profit incentive that is causing the problem . . . but even that milk is pretty nutritious. It just tastes like ass.

Weren,

Perhaps, you misunderstood me.

I am not advicing for having raw milk either.

By saying if you can ge raw milk directly, i simply meant that it should be free of any chemicals, those are used during the process of pasteurization.

I’d say it’s the additives (even the so-called natural ones) that are causing people to become allergic to foods in adulthood.

Von… over here the potato growers have cultivated them to have far less starch, so you could go back to making your fries with the humble potato again  (I found this out whilst soaking my chips (that’s fries to you) to get rid of the starch, and there was none)

Well I will take that under advisement. The thing I don’t like about potatoes is the carbs. They go straight to my thighs.

Not sure whether you were joking or not about that :-s

I have an aversion to high fat foods… can’t stomach them, but this mechanism is obviously there for a reason…

I ate like half a carrot cake at about 4am this morning and it had roughly the same effect Von.
