Wow the thread got chopped in half.
I’m preparing for the summer and trying to think of good road trips.
Yeah, long threads are bad for the server or something, I don’t know. Trust the machines.
Where are you thinking for road trips? I was just out New Mexico way, that part of the US is surreal for a Northeasterner. You can drive and drive and never get anywhere, but somehow at the same time it’s new and beautiful over and over again.
I’ve gotta get to Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island to complete the lower 48. So I’m trying to plot a course to Acadia NP with enough time to roam around the backroads up there for a while. The west is something else. I was in Denver for a while and took full advantage of being near that part of the country. I roamed all over the deserts quite a bit and drove the pacific coast twice. More road tripping than I even thought I’d get to do in a lifetime. Was nuts.
What part of New Mexico were you in?
Mostly Santa Fe, but we did a day trip to a little town on the other side of the mountains from Albuquerque. We were still in the foothills so you could see way out across the scrubby desert with all these giant geological formations shooting out everywhere. It screws with my perception of distance, so all the mesas and plateaus and buttes look like they’re either a pile of sand three blocks over, or the biggest mountain on earth and a million miles away.
Though I’m from outside of Boston, I left after high-school so I’m pretty out of touch with the area. My only confident recommendation is Cape Cod, though take it with some salt because it’s a lot of nostalgia.
It’s a bit of a pain to get to in the summer, but the ferry from Boston to Provincetown is a good bet if you don’t want to sit in traffic. Provincetown is good night life if you’re progressive – used to be gay Mecca before it was safe to be out elsewhere and feels a bit like a tiny version of Amsterdam now. It’s also 400 years old, the first place the pilgrims landed before they continued into Mass Bay, then it was a fishing village for a few hundred years. So it’s an eclectic mix. Good whale watching.
National Seashore has good ocean-side beaches, it’s mostly undeveloped and you can camp and sometimes surf a bit (sometimes). The bay-side beaches are cool at low tide, you can walk straight out for a mile, and find lots of little life and things in tidepools and rivulets.
And it’s dark enough most nights that you can see the Milky Way.
I’ll be up there sometime in August, if that’s when you’re planning your trip. First round’s on me.
Taking notes on this. Good recs. I was in DC in February for a show at The Anthem, left just a few hours before that guy lit himself on fire near an embassy. Hadn’t been there in a while and the city felt a lot smaller than I remember.
About those long views out west, if you get a chance to do a trip out there again, take a week or so and rent a car and just explore the 4 corners area where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona meet. Lots of crazy stuff out there. Here’s a shot from inside Canyonlands National Park. Like standing on the edge of a canyon looking down at the edge of a canyon in the canyon. Just nuts.

I see your chips and I raise them chicken nuggets.

I’ve been in Nashville for a few days, eating a lot of bbq and casually glancing around to see if I can spot the hawk tuah girl from tiktok.
…so she doesn’t notice you sneaking away, right?
I think she’s gotta be out doing a media tour or something. There are tons of ones here that are basically clones of her though so it’s fine.
Producer’s note to fans and critics alike. The problem of whether or not posting audio recordings like mine is appropriate in a forum, is resolved by considering other social media like podcasting, live streaming, video making, etc.
Better i should say the problem is changed, not resolved. The problem would not be then ‘is this appropriate’, but is this really inappropriate, here, at a philosophy forum.
Even being devoid of anything philosophical, it still couldn’t be inappropriate when placed in a least serious and philosophical thread, could it?
The problem we are faced with is the ontology of the categories or appropriateness and how they correspond to their substances and the defining features of their classification status. Sometimes place X where Y is inappropriate can be identical enough to Z so that it may pass as an appropriate place for Y.
Ergo, through transbivalent discursion I can show that a church is equivalent to a shoddy dive bar in downtown Milwaukee, and therefore vulgar jokes are appropriate in church.
I can guarantee you would be welcome in my church.
Are there any hot chicks there that would hold hands and think pure thoughts with a convicted felon?
hmmmmmm
I wouldn’t be a very good judge of that.
Church girls love criminals.
Been road tripping for a week or so. Sitting in a hotel in some random town in southern Illinois surrounded by farms and shit. Saw the gateway arch and the fires in the hills outside LA. Ate some tacos.
Until they don’t.
I guess
